A Personal Assistant is required to support an autistic fourteen‑year‑old girl with a learning difficulty, living in Truro.
She is pre‑verbal and communicates through single words and gestures. She may show some self‑injurious behaviours when frustrated or dysregulated, so a calm and patient approach is essential.
She loves baking, sensory play, the beach, water, animals, local attractions like the Eden Project, walks, and rollercoaster rides. She enjoys going to new places but does not like crowds, loud noises, or busy environments.
The role involves supporting her at home and in the community, helping her take part in activities she enjoys, providing reassurance and support with emotional regulation, ensuring safety, and following routines.
The ideal candidate would be patient, understanding, and calm, able to read non‑verbal communication, confident supporting behaviour that may challenge, and happy to join in outdoor and sensory activities.
Six hours per week are available, with flexible scheduling to suit the candidate's availability. Some weekend and school holiday availability will be required.
This is a rewarding role, supporting a young person to access the community, enjoy activities, and helping her family balance their daily lives.
Some knowledge or personal experience of working with young people is essential. A full driving licence is desirable. Experience with complex medical needs is helpful but not essential.
The successful applicant will be employed under a private arrangement with the family, and not be employed or carry out work for Cornwall Council.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All offers of employment will be subject to the successful candidate undertaking an enhanced DBS check, the administration process will be undertaken by Cornwall Council.
The rate of pay starts at £13.45 per hour with potential increase based on skills and experience.
