About the Role
We are looking for a suitably qualified Biomedical Scientist to join our busy laboratory, which offers experience in a wide range of histological techniques. The role may include routine histology, dissection, immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy, neuropathology and non-gynaecological cytology. The department is fully computerised and processes approximately 34,000 surgical specimens per annum.
The Cellular Pathology Team works alongside 14 consultant histopathologists, specialist trainees, and a SAS doctor in the Department of Cellular Pathology within a large and established Pathology Directorate providing neuro‑pathology, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, non gynaecological cytology, electron microscopy and autopsy services to Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Responsibilities
* Transfer of histology samples
* Embedding and microtomy of histology blocks
* Staining and quality control of histology slides
* Tinctorial special stains
* Neuropathology techniques
* Immunocytochemistry preparation for differential diagnosis of cancer
* Potential training in dissection
* Direct more junior staff regarding technical and work issues
* Deal with telephone enquiries from nurses, clinicians, healthcare practitioners, giving technical advice on results and use of the service
* Appropriate recording of inventory management within the section to ensure accurate recording of receipt and issue of stock
* Work flexibly
* Explain testing procedures and risks to patients and their guardians; collect data on patients' health and medication and obtain informed consent for procedure, if required
* Assist in effective verbal and written communication by qualified and unqualified staff
* Communicate, as appropriate, using information technology
* Report any issues and complaints to appropriate person
* Perform work duties to the standards required as an HCPC Biomedical Scientist
* Undertake the correct procedures for the handling of specimens, pre and post analysis
* Maintain and operate equipment used in the preparation and analysis of specimens
* Perform a range of specialist and routine laboratory tests autonomously and demonstrate an understanding of the scientific basis for tests and the disease processes under investigation
* Demonstrate awareness of factors affecting sample integrity, risks associated with the sample reagents or method and other tests indicated by the outcome of the analysis
* Use the main laboratory computer system in accordance with service requirements
* Perform work consistent with health and safety legislation, policies, procedures and assessment of risk
* Ensure that all adverse incidents are reported to Datix (and to the MHRA where appropriate) in a timely manner
* Correct and safe use and safety of equipment and physical environment
* Troubleshoot complex issues on analytical equipment
* Receipt, checking, preparation, safe handling, dealing with spillage and storage of biological samples for analysis (including high risk samples)
* Teach and train staff specialised techniques
