We are Monmouthshire: Celebrating Cultures past and present
Background information
MonLife Heritage has been awarded an Anti-Racist Wales Culture Fund grant from Welsh Government to deliver a project entitled We are Monmouthshire: Celebrating Cultures past and present.
MonLife Heritage sits within the directorate of Place and Community Wellbeing at Monmouthshire County Council. We manage a diverse portfolio of heritage sites and museum collections and works to maximise our heritage assets to enhance the vibrancy of Monmouthshire and promote a deeply rooted sense of place. Our vision is to enrich people’s lives by creating engaging and inspiring heritage experiences across the county.
In our previous Anti Racist Wales work we have:
* Installed a permanent gallery exploring the contribution of different cultures to the life of Chepstow.
* Highlighted hidden histories through intervention panels in Abergavenny and Chepstow Museums.
* Co curated exhibitions with a variety of community groups.
* Curated exhibitions focusing on objects which have a particular connection to empire, slavery, colonialism and/or hidden histories.
* Carried out a language audit of our catalogue and created a language policy document.
* Trained front of house staff to support community exhibitions.
* With others, produced two videos, one focusing on life of the life of Ukrainians in Chepstow, the other providing an overview of the Rosalie Community a former plantation with links to Abergavenny.
* Carried out research projects in possible portraits of Nathanial Wells and Minstrelsy in Monmouthshire.
* Produced resources for schools – a series of boxes containing products of Empire, a large-scale interactive wall map where visitors can trace the journeys made by the people on display and identify where products of Empire originated and a family/children’s trail to enable exploration of the gallery.
