Senior / Principal Ecologist – Arup
Arup is recruiting Senior / Principal Ecologists on a permanent contract for offices in York, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh. You will be part of a team of ecologists within Arup’s North geography. Projects vary across renewable energy, water, transport and data centre sectors, providing a diverse workload.
Responsibilities
* Prepare clear and concise reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), species survey reports, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Habitats Regulations Appraisals (HRA) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments.
* Provide advice on restoration/enhancement of habitats, biodiversity design and integration of green infrastructure and nature-based solutions to secure biodiversity gain and strengthen climate resilience.
* Contribute specialist knowledge in areas such as ornithology, HRA, BNG, aquatic ecology, etc., and undertake field surveys (Phase 1 Habitat/UKHab surveys, protected species surveys such as bats, otter, badger) and protected species licences.
* Mentor and develop junior staff, helping them advance their careers.
* Utilise ArcGIS and digital tools to deliver efficient and innovative ecological outcomes.
Qualifications and experience
* Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Zoology, Geography or Biology (or equivalent).
* A postgraduate qualification (e.g., MSc in Ecological Consultancy) is advantageous but not essential. Membership of CIEEM or equivalent, and active progression toward Chartership.
* Full driving licence is essential.
* Experience in the consulting industry with a broad ecological background and client-facing skills.
* Experience with ArcGIS and related digital tools.
