Pay Rate: £90–£125 per day (dependent on experience)
Contract Type: Full-time, long-term, term-time only
Start Date: Immediate or by agreement

-----------------------------------

Role Overview

A thriving primary school in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, is seeking a skilled, compassionate, and proactive Behaviour Mentor to join its pastoral team. The school values inclusion, wellbeing, and academic excellence, believing that pupils flourish when their emotional and behavioural needs are met alongside their learning.

As a Behaviour Mentor, you will provide support to pupils who struggle with managing behaviour, regulating emotions, or engaging fully in the classroom. Children you support may have SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs, ADHD, anxiety, low self-esteem, or challenges forming positive peer relationships.

Your work will directly impact pupils’ ability to engage with learning, form friendships, and develop resilience. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy mentoring primary-aged children, delivering structured pastoral support, and collaborating with teachers and pastoral staff to provide consistent, personalised interventions.

-----------------------------------

Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The Behaviour Mentor’s role is to help pupils overcome barriers to learning caused by behavioural or emotional difficulties. Your work will involve both proactive and reactive support:

* Proactive support: Plan and deliver 1:1 mentoring and small group interventions focusing on emotional regulation, resilience, confidence, and social skills.

* Reactive support: Provide timely support during behavioural incidents, helping pupils manage emotions, repair relationships, and return positively to learning.

The school operates a trauma-informed, restorative approach to behaviour, recognising that challenging behaviour often signals unmet needs. You will support children in understanding their emotions, developing coping strategies, and building positive relationships with peers and adults.

-----------------------------------

Key Responsibilities

As a Behaviour Mentor in Borehamwood, your responsibilities will include:

* Delivering 1:1 mentoring for pupils needing additional behavioural or emotional support.

* Leading small group sessions to develop social skills, self-confidence, emotional regulation, and resilience.

* Supporting pupils in classrooms to maintain engagement, focus, and positive behaviour.

* Assisting during unstructured times, such as break times, lunchtimes, and transitions, to reduce conflict and promote positive social interaction.

* Calmly de-escalating challenging behaviour using restorative strategies.

* Supporting pupils after incidents to reflect on behaviour, repair relationships, and develop strategies for improvement.

* Collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to implement individual behaviour support plans.

* Maintaining accurate records of interventions, incidents, and outcomes.

* Promoting restorative practices, empathy, and problem-solving skills.

* Upholding safeguarding policies and professional boundaries at all times.

-----------------------------------

The School Environment

This primary school in Borehamwood serves a diverse community and places a strong emphasis on inclusion, pastoral care, and pupil wellbeing. Leadership recognises the value of Behaviour Mentors, providing guidance, supervision, and professional development opportunities.

The school uses trauma-informed and restorative approaches alongside structured behaviour management systems. The aim is to develop pupils’ long-term emotional resilience, self-regulation, and social skills while creating a safe, nurturing environment for all children.

-----------------------------------

Students You Will Support

Children requiring Behaviour Mentor support may:

* Display disruptive, withdrawn, or challenging behaviour.

* Struggle with emotional regulation, anxiety, or low self-esteem.

* Have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment-related difficulties.

* Experience difficulties with peer relationships, routines, or transitions.

* Be at risk of disengaging from learning or social activities.

Your role will enable pupils to develop confidence, resilience, and positive behavioural strategies, helping them engage fully in school life.

-----------------------------------

Who This Role Is Suitable For

This role is ideal for individuals who:

* Have experience supporting primary-aged children in educational or care settings.

* Are patient, empathetic, and emotionally resilient.

* Can manage challenging behaviour effectively and supportively.

* Are confident in building strong, professional relationships with young children.

* Are motivated to work in pastoral care and support inclusion.

Graduates in psychology, education, social sciences, or related fields are encouraged to apply, as are experienced Behaviour Mentors seeking a primary school environment.

Essential Requirements

* Experience supporting children with behavioural or emotional challenges.

* Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.

* Ability to remain calm, professional, and consistent under pressure.

* Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and equality.

* Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development.

-----------------------------------

Desirable Experience

* Previous Behaviour Mentor or Teaching Assistant experience in primary schools.

* Knowledge of SEMH, ADHD, or trauma-informed practice.

* Experience delivering 1:1 or small group interventions.

* Relevant qualifications in education, pastoral care, or child development.

-----------------------------------

What the School Offers

* Competitive daily pay with long-term stability.

* Comprehensive induction and ongoing professional development.

* Supportive teaching, pastoral, and leadership teams.

* Opportunities for career progression within primary education and pastoral care.

* A positive, inclusive, and professional working environment.
