Role focus: Powertrain Architect and Lead Engineer who will own the clean sheet design and development of Norton’s powertrain systems from concept through production. This is a hands-on leadership role that involves mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with manufacturing, procurement, suppliers, and test teams to deliver innovative, high-performance powertrain solutions.
The Role
Responsibilities
* Conceptualise and design clean sheet powertrain architectures and systems
* Lead end-to-end design of base engine, gearbox, and powertrain components from concept to production
* Oversee 3D modelling, drawings, and technical documentation to ensure compliance with GD&T and engineering standards
* Mentor and provide technical direction to junior engineers, reviewing work and design outputs
* Select materials and finishes to meet performance, durability, and cost targets
* Liaise with suppliers and manufacturing partners to resolve technical issues and ensure DFM/DFA compliance
* Drive root cause analysis and problem resolution during prototype build, testing, and validation phases
* Champion continuous improvement in performance, weight optimisation, reliability, and cost efficiency
* Act as the technical authority for powertrain design decisions within cross-functional project teams
Person Specification
* Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
* Extensive experience in powertrain mechanical design, including base engine, gearbox, and drivetrain development from clean-sheet design
* Strong CAD skills — Creo preferred; NX or CATIA also considered
* Expertise in GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and design-for-manufacture (casting, machining, forging)
* Knowledge of materials science, heat treatment, and surface finishing for high-performance applications
* Experience leading design reviews, mentoring engineers, and signing off drawings
* Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with internal teams and suppliers
