The Assistant Practitioner – School Years will support the delivery of school health services by facilitating and empowering school-age children to engage in healthy lifestyles through health promotion, screening, and anticipatory care. Working under the guidance of the School Nurse, the postholder applies the principles of public health, nursing, and school nursing to support children and families across the Highland region. The role primarily focuses on children aged 5 to 12 years but may include working with children and young people of all ages, depending on service needs.
Key Responsibilities
* Support delivery of universal school health services, contributing to national and local health and wellbeing outcomes
* Undertake child health screening in schools as directed by the School Nurse, including:
* Height and weight measurements
* BMI calculations
* Hearing and vision checks
* Developmental observations
* Identify and report any signs of ill health or abnormality to enable appropriate follow-up
* Deliver health promotion and health improvement activities to individuals, families, and communities
* Provide one-to-one support to children, young people, and families on topics such as emotional wellbeing, relationships, and positive parenting
* Collaborate with the Named Person, school staff, NHS Highland Children’s Services, and other key professionals to promote positive health outcomes
* Contribute to anticipatory and supportive care as part of an integrated team approach
* Record and report observations accurately and ensure timely communication with supervising practitioners
