Position Overview
In partnership with the Barrett Centre of Innovation in Sustainable Urban Agriculture, this student job supports the CiCan Campus Living Lab project, focusing on waste management, food literacy, food security, sustainable practices, and community engagement. The role involves working on an urban farm, supporting a field-to-fork model, and contributing to sustainable food practices.
Responsibilities
* Collaborate to develop resources for an on-campus circular food economy based on a Food Hierarchy Model.
* Manage the movement of DC-grown produce and surplus food within Weston Centre operations.
* Identify excess or perishable food items and develop value-added products for sale or future use.
* Support data collection, harvesting, washing, packing, inventory management, composting, and distribution activities.
Required Skills and Qualifications
* Food Handlers certificate required
* Experience working in a kitchen environment with proper sanitation techniques
* Knowledge of food handling, processing, and quality assurance
* Experience managing food waste and composting
* Inventory management skills
* Ability to work in a team and adhere to goals
* Attention to detail, strong communication, and interpersonal skills
* Ability to work independently, organize tasks, and operate kitchen equipment safely
* Reliable with punctuality and a strong work ethic
Additional Information
Salary: $18.56 per hour
Work hours: Approximately 426 hours total, up to 18 hours/week over six months, with flexible hours including evenings and weekends. The project concludes by December 2024.
