Biomedical Scientist – Haematology & Blood Transfusion
University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated Biomedical Scientist to join the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department. The role is based primarily at Royal Bournemouth Hospital with cross-site working at Poole Hospital on a rotational roster. The department is fully UKAS accredited and an IBMS accredited training laboratory.
The successful candidate will routinely rotate through all sections of the department and participate in the 24/7 shift system. The role requires HCPC registration and completion of the IBMS registration portfolio.
Department Overview
The Haematology department is equipped with multiple Beckman Coulter DxH 900s, Starrsed RS ESR analysers, and STa R Max coagulation analysers. It is a centre of excellence for chronic blood disorders such as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. The Transfusion service supports a comprehensive haemophilia service, contributes to NHSBT pilots, and participates in clinical trials. The department is fully automated with Bio-Rad IH500 analysers and Haemonetics blood tracking.
Job Responsibilities
* Validate and troubleshoot laboratory results, maintenance, and automation equipment.
* Stock management, quality assurance, and participation in EQA/IQA programmes.
* Perform manual tests, blood‑film morphology and other haemato‑clinical assays.
* Support the 24/7 out‑of‑hours service.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Completed accredited BSc in Biomedical Science.
* HCPC registration.
Experience
* Experience in Haematology, Coagulation, and Transfusion.
* Experience in a UKAS and MHRA approved laboratory.
* Desire to complete the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology with Hospital Transfusion practice.
* Good interpretive skills at bench level.
* Attention to detail and accuracy.
* Basic computer skills; familiarity with database, spreadsheet, and quality management software.
* Familiarity with WinPath software.
Knowledge
* Willingness to learn new skills and participate in CPD.
* Good understanding of Haematology, Coagulation, and Transfusion science.
Other Requirements
* Desire and ability to relocate to the area.
Personal Attributes
* Ability to prioritise and work quickly and accurately for urgent patient‑centred service.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
