We have an exciting opportunity for a Leakage & Demand Reduction SME to join the Smart Metering team at Yorkshire Water and be a part of helping Yorkshire Water to provide the best service to our customers. Could this be you?
What we do:
Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it's so much more than this.
We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire's water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region's health, wellbeing, and prosperity.
New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry. Smart Metering are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.
Yorkshire Water is moving to smart metering as standard, with around 1.6 million meters set to be in operation by the end of AMP8, driving significant change across systems, people, and processes. We're now looking for a motivated specialist to support our Business Transformation Manager in enhancing smart metering technology and ways of working to reduce leakage and manage customer demand. Acting as a subject matter expert in Leakage and Demand Reduction, you will design, run, and evaluate pilots that turn data and real world insight into practical solutions—ensuring decisions are based on measurable benefits rather than technology alone. You'll play a key role in shaping how smart metering contributes to leakage reduction, Per Capita Consumption improvements, and Non Household demand management, working closely with technology and operational teams to translate insight into effective system, process, and behavioural change throughout AMP8.
Where you fit in:
As our Leakage & Demand Reduction SME you will
Design and refine key business processes to enhance service quality, efficiency, insight generation, and customer outcomes.
Define acceptance criteria and support end to end testing, including UAT and metering readiness, to ensure smooth and controlled releases.
Provide insight and guidance to drive Leakage and Demand Reduction change, informing interventions and benefits realisation across CX, water efficiency, and leakage.
Shape behavioural change initiatives by using data and pilot insights to support improved water efficiency and customer experience.
Support the CX contribution to demand reduction, including activity aligned to PCC reduction targets and improved customer interactions.
Enable rollout of CX tools and agent interfaces (e.g., Loop) to support insight led customer conversations and operational decision making.
Maintain stakeholder mapping and impact assessments, ensuring all affected teams are engaged, supported, and prepared for change.
Provide SME input on leakage and demand data, supporting accurate reporting, benefits tracking, and evidence based performance improvement.
What skills & qualifications you will need:
Strong communication skills, able to engage and influence operational, technical, and senior stakeholders to build alignment and deliver meaningful change.
Proven ability to work at pace within a complex water industry environment, managing multiple priorities while staying focused on outcomes and benefits.
Proactive, organised, and self motivated, with clear ownership and accountability for delivering improvements across leakage and demand reduction.
Experienced in stakeholder management at all levels, with a track record of securing buy in for changes to processes, systems, and customer facing activity.
Confident analysing complex operational and customer data, translating it into clear insight that informs practical interventions to reduce leakage and improve water efficiency.
Deep understanding of leakage, water balance, PCC, demand reduction, and the behavioural factors that influence customer consumption.
Resilient, positive, and committed to delivering sustainable performance improvement across leakage and water efficiency.
Skilled at working across operational, analytical, and customer focused teams to ensure insights and change initiatives are embedded effectively.
You will also benefit from having:
Strong understanding of smart metering and the ability to use meter data to prioritise action, influence customer behaviour, and drive tangible efficiency and demand reduction benefits beyond simple technology deployment.
Experience delivering within resource and financial constraints, applying pragmatic problem solving to maximise value and ensure effective use of smart metering insight.
Proven capability in process mapping and redesign within utilities, with experience defining capability requirements and producing system specifications that align data, process, and business needs.
Strong cross functional relationship building skills, maintaining a broad internal and external network to support successful adoption of smart metering solutions and programmes.
Although we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it's important to us that we support flexible working patterns and job share options (when we can), to help you make the best of both your work and home life. We know that juggling childcare responsibilities or getting that ideal work/life balance isn't always easy
Do we sound like your cup of tea?
