Overview

KMPT are recruiting 2 Medical Education UG Fellows - Trust Grade ST4-ST7 Trainee Doctor. A full-time post (40 hours) is available as well as a 2nd post which can be part-time from 2 days (16 hours) per week up to full time depending on the successful candidate's preference. The post is a 12-month fixed term Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from 06/08/2025 to 04/08/2026.

The post holder will be expected to attend various locations in Kent for meetings, teaching sessions and events but the base of the post can be flexible to suit the appointed candidate. This Medical Education Fellowship Post is hosted by Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT). The fellowship role is created to support Undergraduate workstreams concerning Medical Student Psychiatry Placements at KMPT. Medical students are linked to Medical Schools: King\'s College London School of Medicine (GKT) and Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS).

Funding for a Postgraduate Qualification in Education will be available to the appointed candidate to undertake in the year. Proposed interview date: 28th March 2025. This post is designed to support ST4-7s who wish to commit to education as part of their career. The OOPE post is aimed at those who want to build on teaching experience, develop educational theory and practice, and undertake supervised educational research.

The post holder will have a designated educational mentor who will oversee development as an educator and coordinate opportunities for personal development. A customised programme of training will be designed around the needs of the individual.

Although enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central to the post, as will engagement with educational issues around undergraduate and postgraduate training in a changing context, both nationally and locally.

Responsibilities

* Teaching: regular schedule of teaching commitments; lead role in supporting and delivering the in-house teaching programme for undergraduate medical students undertaking Psychiatry placements within the Trust. Includes contributing to student inductions, coordinating fellow psychiatric trainees to teach students, supporting simulation training and student meetings. Undergraduate Administrators facilitate feedback and organise teaching topics; opportunities to audit aspects of the undergraduate teaching programme.
* Educational Research and Quality Improvement: participate in educational research activities and QI projects; supported to generate publishable outputs including conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
* Clinical commitment: 1 day per week with the Trust to maintain clinical involvement; details depend on appointee\'s specialty and experience (e.g., outpatient clinics). Remuneration aligned with training level at appointment.
* Learning about Medical Education structures and roles: attend Medical Education Committee meetings; opportunities to attend KMMS (Canterbury) and GKT (London) meetings and to shadow UG tutors and the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education.
* Simulation: support with simulation training delivered face-to-face at teaching events.
* Key Result Areas: support education for medical students; meet Learning and Development Agreement (LDA) requirements; meet KMMS and GKT/KCL requirements; contribute to MDT training in KMPT; raise KMPT\'s profile as an education provider; enhance KMPT appeal to trainee doctors.
* Clinical duties: part of a multi-professional team; exposure to E.g. Older Adults patients and Psychiatric Inpatient wards; specialist clinics accommodated based on candidate needs; possible cross-site work across Kent. Face-to-face teaching at KMPT sites.
* On-call contribution: potential to contribute to an out-of-hours Tier 2 on-call rota for section 12 approved doctors.


Education and Professional Development

* Work with Medical Education Manager and Deputy Medical Education Manager on projects including: simulation facility development and training; medical student teaching and inductions; aligning teaching programmes with curricula; development of in-house e-learning resources; audit and quality monitoring; faculty development teaching. Administrative support provided for all projects.
* Two sessions of clinical work per week. The duties may evolve over time and are subject to management review.


Appraisal and Supervision

* The Director of Undergraduate Medical Education will supervise the Fellow with weekly supervision (one hour) to set objectives and agree a personal development plan. Developments will be supported through the Trust and KMPT.


Environment

Driving licence essential. The post holder must be flexible and able to travel across KMPT sites, with cross-site work across Kent as required. Face-to-face teaching support at various KMPT Kent sites.
