The role

About the Organisation:

In June 2025, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care introduced two key frameworks: the Population Health Framework and the Service Renewal Framework (SRF). The SRF sets out an ambitious vision to drive innovation and enable more integrated delivery across Scotland’s health and care services. As part of this transformation, NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) and NHS Education for Scotland (NES) will come together to form a new organisation: Public Services Delivery Scotland in April 2026. The new organisation will play a pivotal role in supporting the renewal and long-term sustainability of health and care services across Scotland. To learn more about the new organisation, please read the public consultation paper, NHS Delivery –

The Post:

The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) is a division of NSS. The core purpose of SNBTS is to meet the transfusion needs of patients in Scotland. To deliver this, SNBTS is the specialist provider of transfusion medicine in Scotland, supplying high quality blood, tissues, cells, products and services.

We have a vacancy for a Specialty Doctor within Donor and Transport Services. The post holder will form part of a national donor medical team. The team supports SNBTS’ mission to supply safe high-quality blood components and products by advising on donor care and selection, and donation management. The team also has an important role in supporting the implementation of the Infected Blood Inquiry (IBI) recommendations, including with regards to providing clinical oversight for the management of Infected Blood Compensation Authority (IBCA) enquiries.

You will build on your clinical knowledge and experience to develop expertise in advanced donor selection and care, including the management of donors with abnormal donation-related test results and complications of donation. You will participate in the management of donor related incidents, complaints and enquiries. You will be involved in the investigation of donations and donors associated with suspected transfusion reactions and adverse events. Workload relating to the IBI includes clinical oversight of responses to requests from IBCA.

The Candidate:

Applicants are required to have four years’ experience after graduation. Experience of a range of clinical specialties (e.g. general practice) are valuable to this role. Previous haematology or transfusion experience is not essential as full training will be given. The role involves a significant administrative component and basic Information Technology (IT) skills are essential.
