Overview
Adult Speech & Language Therapist - Band 6. The Sutton Community Neuro therapy & Adult Speech & Language therapy service is a multidisciplinary team offering specialist, comprehensive assessment and intervention. We work with adults in the Sutton area of South West London who have neurological conditions and/or acquired communication, speech, eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.
Main duties of the job
* Provide specialist Speech and Language therapy assessment, differential diagnosis and treatment for a caseload of adult patients with acquired communication and/or swallowing disorders within community settings.
* Demonstrate clinical effectiveness by using evidence-based practice and outcome measures in swallowing and communication disorders.
* Hold and manage a specialist caseload and be legally accountable for all clinical decisions and professional actions, seeking advice from senior colleagues as appropriate.
* Identify SMART goals and offer an appropriate therapy programme, taking into account level of understanding, motivation, insight, level of support and self-management potential.

Principal Duties To Include
* Provide highly specialist SLT services to adults referred to the community service.
* Provide specialist multidisciplinary assessment of adults considering premorbid skills and environmental factors.
* Provide differential diagnosis of the communication/swallowing impairment, clearly define strengths and needs, identify SMART goals and offer an appropriate therapy programme, considering the level of understanding, motivation, insight, level of support and self-management potential.
* Develop and provide SLT training within the department and to other professionals, families/carers and SLT students (to degree level), SLT assistants and support workers.
Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
* Demonstrate a well-developed knowledge of therapy, underpinned by current evidence-based practice.
* Manage a clinical caseload as an autonomous practitioner.
* Develop the ability to reflect on auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of a client’s communication and identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness.
* Use knowledge to inform sound clinical judgments and decision making for case management.
* Make appropriate differential diagnoses based on assessment findings.
Person specification
Essential criteria
* Relevant experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
* Knowledge/experience in the use of evidence-based assessment and treatment approaches and practices.
* Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
Desirable criteria
* Registered with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
* Knowledge of risk assessment for this client group.
