Automotive Service Manager Required – Independent Garage
1. Location: Walsall, West Midlands
2. Salary: up to £40,000 Basic | OTE £50,000 | Company Car
3. Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:30am – 5:30pm with Saturdays: 8:30am – 12:30pm (1 in 2 rota)
Our client, a well-established and busy independent automotive service and repair centre, is seeking an experienced Service Manager to take full ownership of their aftersales operation.
This is a hands-on, senior position within a fast-paced independent garage environment, working predominantly with a mix of cars & LCVs and a strong trade customer base. Unlike main dealerships, this position requires a highly capable individual who can oversee and actively contribute to every stage of the service and repair process.
Key Responsibilities for the Service Manager:
As Service Manager, you will be responsible for the complete day-to-day running of the aftersales department, including:
4. Full responsibility for the day-to-day running and performance of the service and workshop operation, including managing staff and ensuring an efficient workflow
5. Leading and supporting the Service Advisor and Technicians, driving productivity, performance, and KPI delivery
6. Maintaining high standards of customer service, handling escalations, and overseeing all bookings through to job completion and invoicing
7. Using strong mechanical knowledge to support diagnostics, repairs, and job costing, including oversight of parts sourcing and labour times
8. Monitoring performance through reports and systems, utilising DMS, Autodata, 1Link, and general IT tools
What Our Client is Looking For in Their Service Manager?
9. Proven experience as a Service Manager or Senior Service Advisor within an independent garage
10. Strong hands-on approach with the ability to manage and deliver operationally
11. Excellent mechanical knowledge of cars and light commercial vehicles
12. Experience working across the full service process (not siloed roles)
13. Confident using:
14. Dealer Management Systems (DMS)
15. Autodata
16. 1Link
17. Microsoft Outlook & Excel
18. Strong leadership and organisational skills
19. Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-role environment
20. Excellent customer service and communication skills
21. Full UK Driving Licence.
This position would suit someone from a large independent garage background who is used to being fully involved in the day-to-day running of the workshop. Individuals from main dealerships may find this vacancy too hands-on unless they have prior experience in a hands-on, varied environment.
Salary & Benefits for the Service Manager:
22. Basic Salary up to £40,000 (depending on experience)
23. On Target Earnings of £50,000
