JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY
The post holder is responsible for assessing care needs, developing, implementing, and evaluating programmes of care. They may be required to teach other midwives and non-midwifery staff. They act as the prime care provider for a group of women, practicing clinical skills at an advanced level developed through experience.
The post holder may take charge of a ward in the absence of the designated responsible person. The maternity unit handles approximately 10,000 births annually. LTHT is a tertiary referral centre for obstetrics and neonatology, with other specialties impacting maternity care, including feto-maternal medicine, adult and neonatal cardiology, neonatal surgery, and reproductive medicine.
The midwife will work within the maternity unit or community, caring for women and their babies before, during, and after pregnancy, participating in internal rotations across the maternity services and covering both day and night shifts. They maintain personal contact with women, assessing and planning care based on individual needs, and are attentive to the anxieties of women and their families.
The midwife ensures prompt communication of any complications or changes in the mother’s or baby’s condition to the appropriate practitioners. They facilitate effective communication among healthcare professionals to ensure continuous care and contribute to the smooth operation of the ward or area. They report on treatment changes and client needs during their shift and may work in different areas of the midwifery service as required. The job requires compliance with PPE protocols, including wearing face masks when necessary.
