Health Care Assistant - General Practice

Previous experience of working in General Practice is essential for this role. Assisting trainednurses and other health care professionals in the delivery of the higheststandard of patient care, ensuring that this is sensitive to the needs of thepatient. To be a member of the practicebased nursing team. Members of thenursing team/medical team will supervise you at all time working to your jobdescription and within your capabilities.


Main duties of the job

Assist thepractice nurses in the delivery ofpatient care, ensuring that the patient safety and well-being is respected atall times.

Communicate courteously and effectively with patients, relatives and carers.Ensure that the Practice Treatment room is kept in a clean and tidy.

Carry out health assessments on newly registeredpatients or selected patient groups

Report all matters pertaining to patients care- changes in condition/circumstances to a relevant member of the nursing ormedical team as a matter of priority and ensure that a document record is kept.

Once trained you may undertake phlebotomy asdirected by the Practice Nurses.

Act at all times with regard to theconfidentiality and sensitivity of issues to do with patients, their care andtreatment.

Record and document all patient contact.

We deliver NHS services in a variety of locations, including HMR, Bury and Bolton. Our Primary Care Academy develops the primary care workforce across HMR and supports the retention of well trained and motivated staff.


Job responsibilities

HCA Duties

Your duties willinclude:

Carry out relevant clerical and reception dutiesas required in relation to nursing services.

Attend relevant meetings as required.

Have knowledge of and act at all times withinthe boundaries of health and safety legislation and data protection acts.

b) Health, Safety and Fire Regulations.

Competence

You are responsible for limiting your actions tothose which you feel competent to undertake. If you have any doubts about yourcompetence during the course of your duties you should immediately speak toyour line manager/supervisor.

In the performance of theduties outlined in this job description, the post-holder may have access toconfidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staffand other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relatingto the practice as a business organisation. All such information from anysource is to be regarded as strictly confidential.

RecordsManagement:

As an employee of the practice, you are legallyresponsible for all records that you gather create or use as part of your workwithin the practice, whether paper based or on computer. All such records areconsidered public records, and you have a legal duty of confidence to serviceusers (even after the employee has left the practice employment).

Health & Safety:

The post-holder will assist inpromoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety and security asdefined in the practice Health & Safety Policy, the Staff Handbook and thePractice Infection Control Policy.

The post-holder willparticipate in any training programme implemented by the practice as part ofthis employment.

Person Specification


Specialist Knowledge/Skills

* IT literate / proficient in the use of a computer
* Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
* Good problem-solving skills
* Ability to manage workload effectively
* Willingness to work at all times towards the best interest of the patient.


Experience

* Experience of working in a primary care environment
* Venepuncture
* Patient medicals including pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately
* Ability to record accurate clinical notes
* Experience of effectively using EMIS/Docman


Qualifications

* Care Certificate
