Role Overview
As Head of Engineering, you'll be responsible for scaling up Hoxton Farms' cultivated fat production from our pilot facility to full-scale manufacturing. You'll lead our technical operations across three core areas: Production, Scale‑Up R&D, and Hardware Development. This is a critical role that blends strategic vision with hands‑on execution. Reporting to the CEO, you’ll work closely with the leadership team to shape the company’s roadmap, drive major engineering build projects and ensure our production capability keeps pace with our commercial goals. From deciding the scale‑up strategy to delivering our next facility, you will have end‑to‑end responsibility for how we turn science into scalable, sustainable food.
Key Responsibilities & Qualifications
* Leadership role in at least one >$10m capex manufacturing scale‑up project
* Hands‑on experience in a deep‑tech/engineering startup (Series A+) or scale‑up
* Undergraduate degree or master’s in Engineering, Biotechnology, or related field
* 8+ years’ professional experience in industrial manufacturing or engineering
* Proven experience scaling up manufacturing processes and delivering engineering projects on time and within budget
* Experience managing technical teams and leading R&D roadmaps
* Best‑in‑class technical expertise with strong focus on COGS reduction and operational efficiency
* Track record bringing complex ideas to reality through rigorous R&D pipeline
* Demonstrated ability to make critical strategic decisions under uncertainty and align operational strategies with business objectives
* Experience steering cross‑functional teams with ability to attract, develop, and retain top talent
* Results‑oriented with strong work ethic, exceptional communication skills, and ability to operate in entrepreneurial environments
* Willing to work in person in London 5 days per week
* Ability to travel internationally when needed
* Large‑scale chemical engineering or food manufacturing experience
* Familiarity with fermentation or cell culture
* Familiarity with operating in regulated industries (food, pharma)
* Experience operating manufacturing facilities at scale
* Experience scaling bioprocesses for novel food ingredients or similar emerging technologies
About the Role
You should be a highly experienced leader with a proven track record of hiring engineers, managing projects and developing strategy in a commercial setting. The role is based full‑time in person at our HQ in London and will involve travel to oversee contractors, partners or facility builds when needed. We are willing to support international relocation.
