Job Description
This exciting opportunity is to join a front‑line operational area team in the fight to tackle environmental crime. As an Environmental Crime Officer (ECO) you will investigate and disrupt waste crime, support enforcement action on other environmental offences, and work closely with subject matter specialists and partner agencies.
Responsibilities
* Investigate and disrupt waste crime, including operators of illegal waste sites and organised crime groups involved in the waste sector.
* Gather intelligence and evidence, prepare case files for court, and present cases to supportive partners.
* Engage in challenging conversations with confrontational individuals, adapting communication styles as needed.
* Travel occasionally to pre‑planned sites and attend overnight stays; maintain visibility across the operational area.
* Co‑locate with the team, attend meetings, and develop investigations.
Qualifications
* Essential: Full UK driving licence; Non‑Police Personnel Vetting Level 2 (NPPV2).
* Background in environmental regulation, intelligence‑led enforcement, or investigation.
* Experience working with partner organisations such as police, councils or other government agencies.
* Proficiency using intelligence products to identify potential enquiry lines and disruption opportunities.
* Desirable: Good knowledge of legislation governing criminal investigations, including the Environmental Permitting Regulations, Environmental Protection Act, Police and Criminal Evidence Act, Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act, and the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act.
* Understanding and experience of working within an intelligence‑led environment and communicating with legal professionals, colleagues and partner enforcement agencies.
Location & Working Arrangements
The role is based in Wallingford, covering the Thames area, including Oxfordshire, Berkshire, parts of Buckinghamshire/Surrey, Hampshire and surrounding counties. It is a hybrid role requiring field work from the office as well as the ability to work from home.
