What skills and experience we're looking for
The governors of Sparken Hill Academy are looking for a highly organised and friendly individual to join our community team as an Admissions and Attendance Officer. This is a key frontline role that supports our school community by managing pupil admissions, monitoring daily attendance and maintaining accurate records in line with statutory requirements. You will be the first point of contact for many families, so a warm and professional manner is essential.
Working Monday to Friday, 8.15am - 3.45pm (35 hours per week), term‑time only.
Key Responsibilities
Admissions Responsibilities
* Processing applications for school places, both in the annual coordinated admissions round and for in‑year transfers
* Applying admissions criteria fairly and consistently in line with the School Admissions Code and the school or local authority's published admissions policy
* Communicating decisions to parents and guardians, including managing appeals and waiting lists
* Liaising with schools, governors, and the local authority to ensure places are filled appropriately and statutory timelines are met
* Supporting families who are new to the area, have children with special educational needs, or are navigating complex circumstances (e.g. looked‑after children, who have highest priority under legislation)
Attendance Responsibilities
* Monitoring attendance data across the school, identifying pupils with persistent absence
* Contacting families when attendance drops, to understand the reasons and offer support
* Working with pastoral teams, social workers, and external agencies to address underlying issues such as health problems, family difficulties, or school anxiety
* Issuing formal notices such as attendance improvement plans, or referrals for penalty notices and legal proceedings where absence is unauthorised and persistent
* Maintaining accurate records in line with statutory requirements
