Job overview
The Cancer Support Worker (CSW) will work alongside and under the guidance of the Upper GI oncology dietitians and consultant dietitian to provide support, advice and assessment for patients who have been diagnosed with upper GI cancer throughout their cancer pathway. Often being the first point of contact the CSW will triage calls and offer advice and support as able signposting and referring on as required.
They will take an active role in contributing towards the developing health and wellbeing interventions and support the oncology dietitians in achieving Service Standards in line with national guidance.
The CSW will provide a link between the oncology dietitians and other health care professionals ensuring referrals and support are organised and prioritised according to need.
Main duties of the job
Communication
1. Demonstrate excellent communication skills with patients and their families upholding the values and behaviours of the organisation in delivering empathic, kind and sensitive care
2. Assess communication needs of patients and their families to ensure they can understand the information being given. Ensure people who contact the service are aware that they are interacting with a support worker who can access and signpost to a range of cancer support material and services
3. Maintain appropriate and detailed documentation of patient contacts and interventions
4. Signpost and co-ordinate translation / alternative modes of communication as required
5. With the support of the Upper GI dietitian develop written information, education material and health and well being resources
6. Professional communication with other staff encouraging the organisation’s values of teamwork, consistency and transparency
7. Continued adherence to information governance policies and procedures and report and deviations
8. Report any concerns that may adversely influence patient care to the oncology dietitians

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Service Delivery and Improvement
1. Assist in the implementation of services within the upper GI pathway from prehabilitation ,treatment, surgery ,rehabilitation and best supportive care
2. Comply with policies and procedures and clinical guidelines that relate to the role
3. Contribute to own service development in line with service changes / developments under the guidance of the oncology dietitians
4. Contribute to surveys and assist with audit procedures as and when required
5. Participate in quality initiatives and data collection as requested.
6. Maintain agreed spreadsheets to capture and audit data that pertains to the upper GI patient pathway
7. Assist the oncology dietitian in capturing data that will help with appropriate service development
8. Maintain time and motion data as requested to demonstrate workload and levels of intervention

Experience
* Experience in admin / supporting role

Qualifications
* 5 GCSEs or equivalent including english and maths
* Educated to at least NVQ Level 3 or equivalent level of competency
