Overview
Provide a high-quality diagnostic service as part of the Histopathology laboratory team. Maintain competence and engage in continual professional development. Work within the department’s written policies on health & safety and quality. Support the Trust’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and compassionate care for patients.
Responsibilities
* Prioritise and organise workload to ensure continuity and efficiency of service.
* Organise own work and complete tasks in a timely manner to satisfactory standards.
* Participate at every stage in the laboratory preparation of tissue sections including embedding and microtomy.
* Participate in the laboratory immunocytochemistry service.
* Participate in the preparation of frozen tissue sections when necessary.
* Assist medical staff during specimen dissection and undertake description and transfer of Category A samples.
* Participate in the Biomedical Scientist extended specimen dissection rota for Category B and C samples following suitable training and competency assessment.
* Participate in internal quality control and external quality assurance schemes and ensure laboratory quality standards are met.
* Supervise the work carried out by trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants as required.
* Assist in the training and development of trainee and registered Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants.
* Filing and archiving of all laboratory material received and produced.
* Assist in the disposal of clinical waste in a safe and respectful manner in line with laboratory policies.
* Ensure preventative maintenance, calibration and equipment failure recording on laboratory instruments and equipment prior to use for patient investigations.
* Prepare, store and use chemicals and reagents according to manufacturer guidelines and laboratory procedures. Maintain COSHH assessments and associated documentation.
* Monitor stocks of consumables, record accurately and alert senior staff to shortfalls. Use resources efficiently and cost-effectively.
* Contribute to the evaluation of new and existing equipment and procedures to ensure continuous service improvement and development.
* Assist in the production, implementation and review of laboratory procedure documentation.
* Promptly report any incidents, accidents and near‑miss occurrences in accordance with department and Trust policies and procedures.
* Actively involved in the implementation of Trust and department policies and procedures and reinforce their use and application.
* Participate in housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and tidy working environment.
