The role is broad and varied, involving software development, system design and implementation, reporting and maintenance – no two days are the same.
Role
We’re looking for someone who loves solving puzzles with data and isn’t afraid to innovate. In this role you will:
* Transform raw data into powerful insights that influence real‑world outcomes.
* Design and refine systems that keep everything running smoothly and efficiently.
* Help shape the future of our datasets, ensuring they tell the right story for today’s NHS priorities.
Main duties of the job
* Lead the design and development of robust data solutions, including SQL‑based systems, dashboards, and automation scripts.
* Deliver advanced analytics to support performance improvement and transformation initiatives.
* Collaborate with stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
* Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with NHS Wales standards.
* Mentor and support junior analysts and developers within the team.
* Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation in data and analytics processes.
Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
* IT related degree or equivalent experience/industry standard training.
* Specialist technical knowledge of programming/query languages.
* Good knowledge of legislation relating to data protection and the release of confidential information.
* Relational database design.
* Agile development methods.
* Application Lifecycle Management.
* VBA.
* Power Platform.
* Microsoft SQL Server 2012 or greater.
* MS SQL Server Integration Services.
* Excellent knowledge of data warehousing, relational databases, information systems and software packages, such as Microsoft Structured Query Language, Microsoft Analysis Services (including multidimensional expressions).
* Expert knowledge of MS Office software packages, including Microsoft Excel, and structured programming skills.
Desirable criteria
* MS SQL Server Analysis Services.
* IIS.
* Python.
* HTML & CSS.
Experience
Essential criteria
* Proven record of delivery in an information‑based environment.
* Experience of taking a lead role in systems development in an Agile development environment.
* Experience of working to deadlines in a customer‑focused environment.
Desirable criteria
* Software development in or for the NHS or a legal practice.
Skills and Attributes
Essential criteria
* Proven analytical, problem‑solving and numeric skills.
* Effective communication skills.
* The ability to manage, motivate and aid development of staff, demonstrating a commitment to personal development.
* Project management skills.
* Advanced keyboard skills.
Desirable criteria
* Up‑to‑date skills in presentation of data using an industry‑standard tool.
* Welsh Language Skills are desirable (levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading and writing).
Other
Essential criteria
* Ability to travel to various sites in Wales and the UK.
* Able to work occasional weekends.
