An exciting opportunity has arisen for the role of Matron in Haematology, Cellular Pathology & Supporting Services. This is a complex and highly specialist directorate at Guys and St Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust that is part of the Cancer & Surgery Clinical Group.
This is a key leadership role for an accomplished nursing professional who is passionate about delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, driving clinical excellence, and supporting operational performance across a dynamic and complex service.
The directorate has a wide portfolio of services operating across the Guy's & St. Thomas's sites. These include 2 acute haematology/oncology wards and a new Young Adult inpatient and ambulatory unit opening this summer 2026. The Directorate manages a haemostasis & thrombosis service on the St. Thomas's site and a haematology day unit on the Guy's site. The haematology day unit includes a large apheresis service providing one of the countries largest red cell exchange service, and cell collections to supporting our growing advanced therapies service.
The Oncology & Haematology Clinical Trials team is a large team of clinical research nurses and clinical research practitioners supporting trials from early phase through to phase 3. Their portfolio includes gene therapy and other immune effector cell therapies.

Main duties of the job
We are seeking a forward-thinking and experienced Senior Nurse with a strong background in leading ward teams and Nurse Specialists within inpatient care settings. This role requires an individual with excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, demonstrable track record of progressive leadership and service development. You will act as a credible and visible role model, inspiring and supporting colleagues to deliver excellence in care.
The successful candidate will be self-motivated, adaptable, and committed to delivering high-quality care within a dynamic and evolving healthcare environment. You will be confident in leading change, championing innovation, and driving the ongoing development of nursing teams to ensure services remain responsive, effective, and patient-centred.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Through strong and visible clinical leadership, the Matron will support Ward and Departmental Sisters/Charge Nurses in promoting excellence in nursing and midwifery care, ensuring the maintenance and continuous improvement of clinical standards across the Directorate.
The post holder will ensure that all patients are treated with compassion, dignity, and respect, recognising and valuing the diversity of the local community and the populations we serve.
A key responsibility of the Matron is to ensure that the patient experience is consistently of the highest quality, inspiring patient and public confidence in our services. This will be achieved through high levels of visibility, accessibility, professional oversight, and active clinical surveillance.
The Matron will work in close partnership with the Head of Nursing & Deputy Head of Nursing for Haematology to ensure effective service delivery, quality assurance, and patient safety, and will provide cross-cover where appropriate to maintain continuity of leadership across the service.

Skills/Knowledge/ Ability
Essential criteria
1. Well developed leadership and influencing skills with the ability to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams, and have them understand the Trust’s and your performance expectations.
2. A commitment to improving patient services through an ability to sustain a clear performance focus on achieving demanding goals.
3. Ability to be intellectually flexible and to look beyond existing structures, ways of working, boundaries and organisations to produce more effective and innovative service delivery and partnerships.
4. Sound political judgement and astuteness in understanding and working with complex policy, and diverse interest groups, and common sense in knowing when to brief “up the line”.
Qualifications/ Education
Essential criteria
5. First level registered Nurse.
6. Broad clinical experience relevant to the post.
7. Evidence of equivalent knowledge and experience to Masters level.
8. A proven track record of operational service management at a senior level in an acute hospital environment, including staff management, financial management and change management.
Desirable criteria
9. A Masters level qualification in nursing or a post graduate qualification is desirable but not essential.
