Environmental Health Officer

Braintree District Council

Temporary, Full Time

£45.00 per hour (umbrella)

Location: Braintree

Closing Date: 12th December 2025

Essex County Council (ECC) are delighted to be supporting Braintree District Council to recruit an Environmental Health Officer on an initial 3-month temporary basis. Please note that you will be required to work in the Council offices or in the District during the placement, at least on several days per week.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated team player to undertake the full range of duties working in a geographical area of the district.

The Housing & Pollution specialist will undertake our HMO licensing, inspect properties for HHSRS compliance and carry out appropriate enforcement, respond to complaints of nuisance, rodent complaints, filthy and verminous premises, drainage issues and serving notices as necessary. It should be noted that the role fully encompasses all issues across these areas of work and the candidate should be capable of adeptly responding to them.

The role will also respond to planning and licensing consultations and play an active role in delivering any public health initiatives that we are involved in.

The Role:

The Housing & Pollution specialist will undertake our HMO licensing, inspect properties for HHSRS compliance and carry out appropriate enforcement, respond to complaints of nuisance, rodent complaints, filthy and verminous premises, drainage issues and serving notices as necessary.

The role will also respond to planning and licensing consultations and play an active part in delivering any public health initiatives that we are involved in.

Principle Accountabilities:

1. Investigate complaints and requests for service in the area and function for which you are responsible.
2. Ensure that all matters of Environmental significance occurring within the area are recorded and pursue action, either personally or through others, to secure Environmental Health compliance.
3. Carry out the work within a team of officers and cover the work of absent colleagues.
4. Support, contribute and comply with quality practices as described within the Corporate Quality Policy and as directed by departmental and team plans/management.
5. Attend and advise Area Committees, if required, to present reports on any functions for which you are responsible.
6. Ensure that the Council and Directorate safety policies are observed.
7. Apply and actively promote the principles of the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy in all areas of employment and service delivery.
8. Advise the Environmental Health Manager if any of the duties and responsibilities of the post cannot be carried out.
9. Willingness and ability to work outside normal office hours when required.
10. Any other duties as required to support the business, including maintaining business continuity and during civil emergencies.
11. To apply and actively promote the principles of the Council’s Safeguarding Procedure in all areas of employment and service delivery.

The Experience You Will Bring:

12. Holds a Degree in Environmental Health or equivalent (. Diploma in Environmental Health)
13. Registered with Environmental Health Registration Board
14. Understand the needs of all customers in respect of the various activities that are regulated by the team
15. Experience of securing regulatory compliance though various means
16. HMO licensing and HHSRS enforcement experience
17. Statutory nuisance investigation experience
18. The ability to interpret and respond to reports relating to planning consultations for various matters, in particular acoustic, odour and contamination surveys and remediation plans.
19. Experienced in complaint investigations relating to vermin, filthy and verminous premises and drainage.
