Job Description
Job Purpose
To make a leading contribution to the project “Topology Of Algebras” working with Rachael Boyd at the University of Glasgow and Richard Hepworth-Young at the University of Aberdeen. The project is funded by a Leverhulme Trust grant and is centered on applying topology techniques to the study of algebras. The successful applicant will join a joint group with collaborators and three PhD students. The grant includes funding for regular in-person group meetings. There are no teaching requirements, though teaching opportunities may be available. A generous travel allowance is provided.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
* Take a leading role in planning and conducting assigned research, individually or jointly, in accordance with project deliverables and strategy.
* Document research output, including analysis and interpretation of data, maintain records and databases, and draft technical/progress reports and papers.
* Establish and maintain your research profile and contribute to publications of international quality in refereed journals; enhance research impact and gather indicators of esteem.
* Present work at international and national conferences, internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops.
* Identify potential funding sources and assist in developing proposals to secure funding.
* Develop and maintain collaborations with colleagues across the research group, School/College/University and wider community.
* Lead team/group meetings, seminars, workshops and School activities to enhance knowledge, outputs and culture.
* Organise, supervise, mentor and train undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced project team members.
* Perform administrative tasks related to the research group and School, including budgets and expenditure.
* Contribute to teaching activities (e.g., tutorials and lectures) and related administration as assigned
* Keep up to date with current knowledge and advances in the field; engage in professional development.
* Undertake other reasonable duties as assigned and contribute to the University’s international profile in line with strategy.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, And Experience
Knowledge and Qualifications – Essential:
* A1 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent research/professional experience.
* A2 Up-to-date knowledge of current issues and directions in the wider subject area (e.g., algebraic topology, homological algebra, representation theory of algebras, or diagram algebras).
* A3 Knowledge of project-specific theories and techniques.
Skills – Essential:
* C1 Ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.
* C2 Ability to work independently, identify project objectives from the literature, design and analyze experiments, identify funding opportunities and draft papers.
* C3 Workload/time/budget/people management skills.
Desirable:
* D1 Excellent interpersonal skills, including teamwork and a collegiate approach.
Experience – Essential:
* E1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, typically including postdoctoral experience relevant to an early career researcher.
* E2 Evidence of an emerging track record of presentation/publication in quality journals/conferences.
* E3 Experience in undertaking independent research.
Desirable:
* F1 Experience making a leading contribution in academic activities.
