Princess Anne Ward is a 33-bed emergency and elective ward, specialising in Surgery and Urology. The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) acts as a member of the care team working under the supervision and guidance of registered nurses, midwives, and other professional staff.
HCAs assist in the planning, implementation, evaluation, and delivery of care by providing support to registered staff, patients, and their families. This is achieved through performing specific care tasks after completing a formal training and assessment program, including:
* Assisting with basic nursing care such as washing, moving and handling, mouth and eye care, urine testing, pressure area care, continence care, catheter care, and attending to patient comfort.
* Assisting with transferring patients on discharge.
* Cleaning and preparing bed areas for new admissions.
* Damp dusting equipment and bed areas daily, and clearing unused equipment.
* Cleaning and checking equipment daily.
* Following Trust procedures on moving and handling, barrier nursing, cross infection, cardiac arrest, fire, major incidents, dealing with patients' property, violence and aggression, incident reporting, and other relevant protocols.
Basic nursing experience is necessary, along with good communication skills both verbally and in writing.
The Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS) collaborates with key health, care, community, and voluntary sector organisations to improve health and reduce inequalities. An example of this partnership is the launch of the HCA Academy, a joint initiative by Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (EPUT) and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (MSEFT), to support the onboarding, induction, education, and development of Healthcare Assistants.
