Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.-
This position supervises and manages a college-wide maintenance, repair and minor construction program for facility equipment and components, to include all HVAC equipment and other equipment /components associated with the environmental systems and physical plant of the college. Initiates repairs and/or adjustments to correct problems found during preventative maintenance inspections. Supervises various trades’ technicians within the college Facilities Management Department. Supervises outside contractors who are contracted by the college to perform preventative maintenance, repair or installation of new equipment, etc. for the college. Work college wide on all Building and facilities. This position has been designated an essential position. The employee filling this position may be required to report to work or otherwise fulfill the responsibilities of the position in the event of a college/campus closure due to weather or other emergent condition(s). Minimum Qualifications:
1. Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern air conditioning and refrigeration repair and maintenance.
2. Knowledge of institutional/industrial air conditioning problems and their associated repairs.
3. Knowledge of maintenance and repair of auxiliary equipment, such as water coolers, humidity control devices and ice making machinery.
4. Knowledge of the principles and practices of plumbing systems.
5. Ability to perform major overhaul and repairs of air-conditioning and/or refrigeration equipment.
6. Ability to plan, estimate and construct air conditioning/refrigeration in large institution type buildings.
7. Ability to coordinate Plumbing/Mechanical project in large institution type buildings with contractors/engineers
8. Ability to supervise skilled college buildings trades technicians and work with a variety of buildings trades journeymen, HVAC mechanics and apprentice workers.
9. Virginia Tradesman Certification – Master Level HVAC Mechanic/Gas Fitter.
10. Experience as a Journeyman in air conditioning or heating, ventilation and air conditioning mechanic.
11. Experience in the plumbing /electrical trade (Certification Preferred).
12. Virginia Driver’s License
13. Universal Type CFC Recovery License/Certification.
