Person Specification

Essential Requirements
* Able to have good relationships with children and adults.
* Participate in development and training opportunities.
* Able to assess any situation and decide on the most suitable outcome.
* Being able to communicate in English is essential.
* You will be in contact with parents / guardians, children, teachers and Cyngor Gwynedd
* Able to make decisions on the spot about the safety and welfare of pupils on school transport
* Recommend solutions to issues that may arise on the transport.
* Use any equipment to transport children safely (harnesses, wheelchair barriers, booster cushions etc.).
* Lifting and moving requirements are physically possible.

Desirable Requirements
* Experience of working with children.
* Experience of working with children with Special Educational Needs.
* Appropriate information about basic first aid.
* Awareness of policies and procedures relating to child protection, health and safety, confidentiality and data protection.
* The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable.

Job Description

Job Requirements
* Supervising and caring for pupils with additional learning needs on school transport, for schools across Gwynedd.
* Assisting pupils to get on and off transport vehicles at school and at their homes, or at approved collection points.

Duties and Responsibilities
* Assist the driver in loading and securing wheelchairs into the vehicle, including installing barriers, checking and supervising the lift on the back of the vehicle, and ramp access.
* Ensure the correct use of car seats / booster cushions / harnesses / seatbelt locks, if necessary.
* Ensure pupils are safe and sit comfortably, with a securely fastened seat belt.
* Assisting pupils with getting on and off vehicles, this may include some lifting and physical movement (training is given where necessary).
* To support pupils with physical, behavioural and/or learning disabilities, to and from their educational setting, in a manner that is sensitive to their needs. Work in accordance to instructions given before the start of the journey.
* To work in collaboration with the driver, to ensure that the service is provided professionally and efficiently, and to respond positively to any reasonable request for changes received from the Education Transport officers.
* Ensuring that pupils can get on vehicles safely and comfortably, in accordance with the nature of their disability, including: -
* The travel assistant will be expected to keep any information shared about the circumstances of the child or family completely confidential. You will be expected to act with tact and diplomacy when speaking to parents/guardians and school staff.
* The assistant may have to transport items between home and school. These can include medicine, equipment, money and communication items. Items should be kept safe while travelling and given to the responsible member of staff upon arrival. A record should be kept by registering all items transferred between the assistant and the person to whom they handed the items to, and a signature must be obtained.
* The assistant will have to report any accident or incident that arises in the course of their duties to the Education Transport Manager, and where a request is made, a form notifying the incident must be completed and returned. The assistant will also be expected to respond appropriately to any misconduct by learners.
* To attend relevant training courses as required, maintaining thorough knowledge and understanding of specific handling techniques, when transporting passengers with special needs
* Play a full part as the service establishes what matters to the people of Gwynedd.
* Ensure that the People of Gwynedd ared at the heart of everything we do.
* Play a full part in developing the team's operational principles together with personal responsibility for adhering to them.
* Operate flexibly within the Team's operational principles to deliver what matters to the residents of Gwynedd.
* Continuously seek opportunities to improve the service and identify issues that prevent the team from delivering effectively and efficiently and take action to resolve these matters.
* Ensure that the information required to prove how well we achieve what matters is retained and that the information is used to improve the service.
* Contribute to and take appropriate decisions to deliver what matters to the people of Gwynedd.
* Assist other teams to achieve what matters to the people of Gwynedd.
* Work in a proactive manner; be open to a different way of thinking; energetic and committed with personal integrity to deliver the above functions.
* Be responsible for personal development to be able to fulfil the post.
* Ensure compliance with Health and Safety rules in the workplace in accordance with the responsibilities noted in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Council's Health and Safety Policy.
* Operate within the Council's policies in relation to equal opportunities and equality.
* Responsible for managing information in accordance with the Council's information management guidelines. Ensure that personal information is treated in accordance with Data Protection legislation.
