Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Medical Secretary in the Breast department. Based at Clatterbridge Hospital, the position is offered on a 9 months fixed term basis working 21 hours per week.


Main duties of the job

This interesting and varied role requires the ability to work well on your own initiative whilst being committed to teamwork as you will need to work with others to meet our patients’ needs. This position requires good communication skills, the ability to meet the demands of working in a busy environment and be able to represent the department with due professionalism.

We have approximately 855 beds trust-wide and our financial turnover is in excess of £337m.

The Wirral is easily accessible with excellent transport links including motorway, train, bus or ferry and within easy reach to the major cities of Liverpool, Chester and Manchester as well as neighbouring North Wales.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be responsible for implementing and managing systems for the office/team workload, ensuring work is completed within strict timescales. Administratively supporting clinical & non-clinical activities.

You will need to exercise your judgement and initiative based on experience and knowledge of arising problems and take appropriate action to resolve situations, including follow up of investigation results, ensuring that all results are presented to medical staff and subsequently actioned/filed into patient’s medical records.

You will have the ability to work under pressure, prioritise your workload and to deal with confidential and sensitive issues in a professional manner.


Person specification


Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

* AMSPAR Medical Secretarial Diploma or equivalent experience
* RSA III word processing or equivalent
* Experience of Audio-typing
* Experience of using own initiative and prioritising workload, using organisational skills
* Previous administrative experience working with in the NHS or medical environment
* Experience of supervising more junior staff


Knowledge and Skills

* Excellent IT skills including use of Microsoft Office
* Awareness of Trust guidelines regarding complaints, confidentiality etc
* Awareness of relevant NHS/departmental targets for example 18 week RTT and cancer
* Experience of using CERNER or relevant patient database


Personal Attributes

* Ability to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy
* Polite, conscientious, courteous and of smart appearance
* Able to recognise and escalate issues out of scope of role
* Ability to exercise independent judgement when problems arise
* Ability to remain calm when working under pressure
* Ability to communicate in a professional manner with patients, relatives, Trust staff and other departments
* Ability to work independently or as part of a team – self-motivated

DBS Information

Trust policy requires that the cost of submitting & processing a DBS application is met by the successful applicant/s. DBS costs are recovered via salary deduction following starting in post.

If the post you are applying for requires a DBS - Inline with Trust policy the cost of submitting and processing a DBS for successful applications would be met by the individual themselves. The amount would vary depending on the level required: Standard Disclosure £21.50+£6.50 or Enhanced Disclosure £49.50+£6.50 (please be aware the additional sum is an administration fee and may increase due to inflation). This will be deducted from your salary, in manageable monthly instalments for up to 3 months following commencement of employment.
