Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist Specialising in Corneal and External Disease

We are excited to recruit a part time Ophthalmology consultant to provide excellent care to our patients for a fixed term between 5th May 2026 to 3rd December 2026 to cover the planned absence of a substantive consultant.

The job plan offers 4.25 programmed activities to provide direct clinical care (inclusive of associated administration time), and 0.75 SPA.

The postholder will ensure safe continuity of care by maintaining clear clinical documentation and providing appropriate handover of ongoing patient care and responsibilities to consultant colleagues and the multidisciplinary team, including structured handover at the start and end of the locum appointment.

As well as being an expert in management of corneal conditions and in corneal and cataract surgery, the successful candidate will have a broad experience in the management of ophthalmology outpatients and will engage in all aspects of ophthalmology patient pathways, including supporting in Eye Casualty as required. A weekly theatre session is included in the proposed job plan for corneal and cataract cases.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to fulfil the following duties within the agreed job plan:

-Provision and development of exceptional ophthalmology services

-Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of the department

-Actively participate in clinical governance and audits

-Actively participate in departmental meetings

-The appointee will comply with all relevant Trust policies relating to administration of patient care.

-To be responsible together with the Clinical Lead for developing the multi-disciplinary team specifically for Corneal and External disease services.

-To manage the required waiting times for consultation and treatment of patients.

-To contribute to the effective functioning of the department as a key member of the ophthalmology team and assume responsibility, both singularly and corporately, for the appointment, management, and education of junior medical staff.

Person specification

Qualifications & Experience

Essential criteria

1. MBBS / MRCS / FRCS or equivalent medical qualification
2. Minimum of 4 years postgraduate training in the UK (or equivalent EEA training)
3. High level of Corneal experience including competence relevant surgical procedures

Desirable criteria

4. Experience of and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff
5. Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the service
6. An interest in developing links with Primary Care
