Health & Safety Manager
Location: Bridgwater, Somerset
BMSL Group are recruiting for a Health & Safety Manager to join one of our established clients that are working on the new build Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station.

THE COMPANY:
One of the primary logistics partners supporting the Hinkley Point C nuclear project delivers full‑scale construction logistics operations, ensuring the safe and efficient flow of materials, vehicles, and personnel across the site. Their remit includes:
* Running the distribution compounds (Initial Delivery Points), which are the key hubs for receiving permanent materials before distribution across the project.
* Managing traffic movement and marshalling, ensuring vehicles are processed safely and in line with the project’s Traffic Management Plans.
* Overseeing material receipt, control, and distribution, including stock control, general receipt of items, and movement of materials between buildings and compounds.
* Supporting contractors on site with day‑to‑day logistical tasks such as housekeeping, signage, material handling, and general site support services.
* Providing workforce support, including teams responsible for carrying out construction logistics services across the project.
* Delivering high‑level logistics leadership for the project’s client, including senior oversight roles such as Director‑level logistics management for the overall HPC development.
Acting as the primary logistics delivery partner for Hinkley Point C, ensuring that all materials, personnel, and vehicle movements are coordinated safely, efficiently, and in alignment with the operational requirements of one of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects.
MAIN RESPONSIBILTIES OF THE ROLE
* Managing a team of H&S advisors, this requires experience in recruitment, training, and HR fundamentals
* Ownership and focal point of the HPC site safety platform (Insight) on behalf of our client
* Working in collaboration with the Environmental Manager and their team
* Accountable for managing the Health, Safety and Environmental Performance Indicators, ensuring they are completed in full and submitted every month
* Responsible for safety performance and reporting accidents and incidents on the Notify software
* Delegated as our clients’ project Fire Safety Office, ensuring all Fire Safety Plans are valid, in place and reviewed to meet permit acceptance, Fire Safety Logbooks are implemented and maintained, and attendance at the site fire forum
* Responsible for reviewing all WJ RAMS and SSOW, ensuring mandatory site SSOW are in place and compliant
* Responsible for working with the WJ Quality team, ensuring our client align with the permit requirements for HPC, monitoring performance and supporting additional training
* Identifying employee and project training requirements and safety information
* Active participation in selected inductions and briefings
* Participate in our clients Logistics internal safety audits to underwrite safety culture and reporting
* Ensure you are fully conversant with our clients Logistics scope documents and the location of the activities
* Monitor and improve the standards of our clients’ teams, putting employees to work, Point of Work Risk Assessment activities and Insight reporting, ensuring working practices are to the highest standard
* Ensure the Health and Safety Compliance Standards of the HPC project are met. This includes the timely collation of safety metrics and dashboard reporting for HPC
* Engage your team collaboratively with the other Tier 1 site integrated H&S teams
* Carry out all duties with full regard to all policies, plans, and procedures relevant to the clients T1 contract
* Share and record best practices and lessons learnt, experience and site issues to allow for continuous improvement
* Responsible for ensuring our client and Site Occupational Health standards are maintained, and performance is measured
* Responsible for ensuring the client and Site Well Being policy has been implemented and reviewed
* Primary investigatory authority when unsafe practices are observed or safety incidents occur (including near misses). Further, safety incident reporting for the client and provision of Lessons Learned, including updates to training and documentation
* Manage documentation in line with site quality procedures
* Manage a formal H&S inspection plan for all managers and leads
* Carry out any other reasonable request as required by your Line Manager
* Work in accordance with our client and HPC Values
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Demonstrate experience managing a team of H&S professionals
Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of Health and Safety regulations, specific to construction industry logistics activities
NEBOSH qualification - preferably general certificate or construction certificate
CITB H&S test pass certificate for Managers & Professionals
Demonstrate a strong construction or engineering background
Demonstrate experience and knowledge of safety in plant and vehicle operations
Demonstrate experience working in a multi-disciplined safety-critical environment
Excellent written and spoken communication skills, able to communicate at all levels
Excellent IT skills – competent with all Microsoft Office packages
An understanding of the principles of equality and diversity in relation to visitors’ and employees’ needs

Demonstrate an understanding of our client and HPC core values

Fire Qualification or experience in fire duties
