Consultant Anaesthetist (with interest in Critical Care)
We are seeking a consultant anaesthetist with an interest in critical care to support anaesthesia and critical care services across oncological specialties at The Christie.
Job Responsibilities
• Provide anaesthesia for patients undergoing oncological surgery and radiotherapy.
• Deliver on‑call cover for the Oncological Critical Care Unit (OCCU) – an 8‑bed unit providing Level 2 and Level 3 care for oncology, haematology, and major general surgical patients.
• Support outpatient critical care services and facilitate overall clinical governance.
• Participate in a 1:8 on‑call rotation for critical care (with plans to reduce to 1:10); separate theatre on‑call rota for emergency surgery.
• Review and agree a personalised job plan with the joint clinical directors and department managers.
• Contribute to the department’s rolling rota, ensuring alignment with the Trust’s policy.

1. Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) (including 1.5 core SPA) – 2.5 PAs

Person Specification
Qualifications
* MBChB/MBBS (or equivalent)
* FRCA (or equivalent)
* ALS certification
* GMC registration – specialist register in Anaesthesia (CCT or CESR within 6 months of interview)
* FFICM, EDIC (or equivalent)
* Extended complementary skills (e.g., Echo/US accreditation)
* GMC specialist register in Intensive Care Medicine (CCT or CESR within 6 months)
Research / Publications
* Commitment to continuing medical education
* Involvement in clinical research in critical care, anaesthesia and/or oncology
* Presentations at regional and national meetings
* Peer‑reviewed publications
Training
* Progression through training consistent with personal circumstances
* Higher training in general, urological and gynaecological surgery
* Experience managing risk and end‑of‑life decisions
* Specialist training in intensive care medicine
* Experience or training in acute oncology or haematology
* Advanced training in intensive care medicine and paediatric anaesthesia
Experience
* Anaesthesia/intensive care experience
* Experience working in an NHS setting
