Position Details

Under the general supervision of the High School Head Coach and Athletic Director/Assistant Athletic Director, the Sub-Varsity Coach is responsible for performing coaching functions for their designated sport. The Coach will develop individual and team proficiency by teaching and coaching individual students and teams in the skills of the sport, physical conditioning, safety, injury prevention and management, the rules and strategies of the game, team cooperation, and good sportsmanship. This position is subject to extension/nonrenewal after each season at the discretion of the Athletic Director/Assistant Director.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. Provides training for athletes on all rules and skills of the designated sport, training on physical conditioning and injury prevention, and development of skills through various drills and individual coaching
2. Assists the Head Athletic Coach in scheduling, providing transportation to tournaments and special sporting events as required
3. Assists in preparing for scheduled sporting events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times
4. Maintains correspondence with players and parents to address any issues or concerns related to the team as requested by the Head Athletic Coach
5. Works with the Head Athletic Coach, Athletic Director, Counselors, and the Athletic Office to ensure that each athlete is academically eligible for participation
6. Monitors athlete class attendance, behavior, and academic progress and works with teachers to encourage academic growth
7. Attends all practices and games as directed by the head athletic coach
8. Monitors the inventory of athletic equipment (usage, storage, repair, and cleaning of all equipment and uniforms)
9. Regularly reviews publications and attends clinics to keep current with innovative ideas and techniques in the designated sport
10. Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program
11. Participate in MHSAA and work with local athletic teams to coordinate participation and practice schedules as needed
12. As required, provides documentation to the Athletic Director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility
13. Performs other assignments as assigned by the Head Coach/Athletic Director/Assistant Athletic Director

Employment Qualifications

14. EDUCATION: This position requires a high school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D.). Additional coursework or a Bachelor’s Degree in Education is preferred
15. EXPERIENCE: Successful coaching experience at the high school level or college coaching/playing experience is essential. Head Varsity Coaching experience is highly desirable
16. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Must advise, coordinate and support the staff of assistant coaches and student assistants
17. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, OR REGISTRATIONS: CPR/First Aid Certification is desirable

20. Possess experience in terms of knowledge, skills, and abilities in the designated sport
21. Inform parents and student-athletes regarding NCAA clearinghouse registration deadlines and academic requirements, etc.
22. Assist the Athletic Director in developing game schedules, practice schedules, facilities use, transportation needs, and the program budget
23. Requisition supplies, materials, and equipment as needed
24. Provide game results to the media; keep season and game-by-game statistics and records; provide statistical reports to the Athletic Director as needed and/or requested
25. Provide statistical information, video, etc. to college recruiters upon request
26. Request varsity awards and present at the awards banquet
27. Stay abreast of students’ academic eligibility and work with teachers and administration to help keep students eligible
28. Assist the Athletic Director in selecting assistant coaches
