Job Description

Introduction

Our client is a corporately owned 24-hour hospital in Faygate, and they are currently seeking a Veterinary Surgeon to join the team on a weekend-only basis. This is a unique opportunity to work in a bustling hospital setting that delivers high-quality care in a well-equipped, purpose-built environment — while still maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The hospital has a strong reputation for clinical excellence, professional development, and collaborative working, and offers the ideal setting for a vet seeking weekend clinical exposure without a full-time commitment.

Working Hours / Rota

This is a weekend-only position, working 10-hour shifts on both Saturdays and Sundays. There is flexibility to discuss additional weekday hours if desired. There are no on-call duties required due to the hospital’s 24-hour coverage.

Role Description

In this role, you will be delivering consultations and procedures in a busy, multi-vet hospital environment, supported by a large and experienced clinical team. Your responsibilities will include managing patient care and monitoring during consultations and surgeries, admitting and discharging patients, ensuring accurate record keeping, and carrying out clinical handovers. You will prescribe medications, perform diagnostic workups, and contribute to the smooth running of the hospital’s weekend operations. Client communication is also a key aspect of the role, ensuring owners are kept up to date on their pets’ care and progress.

Team Size

You will be joining a large and supportive clinical team comprising three night vets, eight day vets, six registered veterinary nurses, one student veterinary nurse, two veterinary care assistants, and five client care assistants. The team is known for its supportive and collaborative culture, with experienced clinicians working together to maintain a high standard of patient and client care throughout the week and weekend.

Practice Details

The practice is a 24-hour hospital located in a peaceful woodland setting, with easy access to the South Downs National Park and the Jurassic Coast. Despite the tranquil surroundings, the hospital is a hub of clinical activity and a highly respected centre for small animal care. The practice is accredited by the RCVS as a Small Animal General Practice and is a Registered Veterinary Nurse Training Practice. It also participates in the VetGDP programme, highlighting its strong commitment to professional development and clinical mentorship. The facility features separate waiting areas and wards for cats and dogs, an isolation suite, and a wide range of diagnostic and surgical equipment that enables the team to handle a diverse and challenging caseload.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an RCVS-registered Veterinary Surgeon with a minimum of two years’ experience in small animal practice, though more experience is welcomed. You should be confident in consultations and routine surgeries, and capable of handling the clinical pace of a hospital setting. A team-focused approach, excellent communication skills, and a strong work ethic are essential. You should be motivated by high clinical standards and keen to contribute to a collaborative team. Experience mentoring or supporting less experienced colleagues would be an asset.
