Family Support Worker – Early Help| West Lancashire (primarily Burscough and Skelmersdale)
Are you passionate about making a real difference to children, young people and families?
Do you thrive in a role where early intervention, strong relationships and meaningful change are central?
If so, we would love to hear from you.
We are recruiting Family Support Workers to join our Children and Family Wellbeing Service (CFW), with a particular focus on West Lancashire, especially Burscough and Skelmersdale.
About the Service
Early Help – Children and Family Wellbeing Service (CFW) is part of Lancashire County Council’s Education and Children’s Services. The service provides early help and support to children and young people aged 0–19 years (up to 25 years for young people with special educational needs and disabilities) and their families across Lancashire.
The service is committed to minimising the impact of disadvantage for Lancashire children by working with children, young people, families and communities as early as possible—ensuring they receive the right support, in the right way, at the right time. By responding early, we help to prevent concerns from escalating and families becoming reliant on statutory services.
Our approach is strengths‑based and relationship‑focused, ensuring families feel heard, supported and empowered to create sustainable change.
Family Intensive Support within CFW
Family Intensive Support (FIS) is a key part of the Early Help offer within Children and Family Wellbeing Service. FIS provides enhanced, intensive interventions for families whose needs are complex, persistent or escalating, but remain below the threshold for statutory social care.
Working alongside universal and targeted Early Help services, Family Intensive Support focuses on:
1. Families with multiple and interrelated needs
2. Preventing escalation to statutory intervention
3. Supporting families to make and sustain change through direct, purposeful and strengths‑based work
Practitioners work closely with families over an extended period, often delivering Level 3 interventions, coordinating multi‑agency support through the Team Around the Family approach and maintaining a strong, consistent professional relationship.
The Role
Family Support Workers in Family Intensive Support deliver direct work with children, young people and their families, both on a one‑to‑one basis and through group work, responding flexibly to need. You will work collaboratively with families and partner agencies to address risk, build resilience and improve outcomes.
Our core aim is to work effectively with our multi‑agency Early Help partners to ensure children, young people and families are safe, healthy and able to achieve their full potential. Early Help, and in particular Family Intensive Support, is fundamental to achieving this vision.
As a Family Support Worker, you will:
4. Undertake assessments of children, young people and families in line with the Early Help Assessment Framework and Team Around the Family methodology
5. Deliver intensive, outcome‑focused interventions as part of an agreed action plan
6. Manage a caseload of families with unmet, complex and enduring needs
7. Provide Level 3 intensive support, working to reduce risk and prevent escalation to statutory services
8. Record case notes accurately within the agreed Case Management IT system, in line with Professional Recording Standards
This is a rewarding and impactful role for practitioners who are motivated, resilient and skilled in relationship‑based practice, committed to making a lasting difference within local communities—particularly in West Lancashire.
