Overview
1 x 30 hours based at Southport Hospital. To provide a comprehensive secretarial service to the Consultant Pathologists, their junior medical staff and the Departmental Manager in the Cellular Pathology Department, assisting with the organisation of their workloads. Manage own workload and co-ordinate activities with other medical secretaries to ensure an efficient service. Exercise initiative and maintain confidentiality at all times.

Main duties of the job
* Typing of histology and non-gynaecological cytology reports into the Telepath system, ensuring patient/requester/clinical details are correct, and checking consistency between handwritten/dictated reports and the diagnosis written on the request card.
* Typing hospital/post mortem reports and distributing signed post mortem reports to agreed recipients in line with HM Coroner guidelines.
* Maintain a database of all post mortem reports typed.
* Support consultants/senior technical staff in non-clinical activities (e.g., preparing presentation documents, production of literature/events/papers) using relevant software.
* Maintain an effective filing and tracking system for casualty sheets for deceased patients post‑mortem.
* Maintain Careflow case sheet retrieval and general filing; obtain case sheets by telephone or in person as required.
* Manage calendar and inform relevant personnel of consultant/medical staff annual/professional leave.
* General office duties including handling mail, email, and printer tasks; participate in office housekeeping.
* Arrange Directorate, Departmental and Trust-wide meetings; circulate agendas and minutes as appropriate.

* Specialist Regional Services: Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit; Spinal Injuries Unit (Southport).
Qualifications
* RSA/OCR III typing or equivalent
* Knowledge of medical terminology
* AMSPAR or equivalent experience
* Shorthand skills/speed writing
Experience
* 2 years’ experience as a medical secretary
* Excellent IT skills and experience with Microsoft Office
* Previous NHS experience

* Self-motivated with ability to work with limited supervision
* Ability to manage difficult/sensitive situations and use initiative
* Effective workload prioritisation and accurate filing/documentation
* Team player with knowledge of hospital IT systems
