Porter
Location: Berkshire Independent Hospital, Reading
Hours: Full Time, weekly hours.
Shift patterns: Varied Early/Late, Monday-Friday and some weekends
The role:
We have a great opportunity for a Porter to join our team at Berkshire Independent Hospital. You will be an integral part of a team who are committed to delivering the highest quality clinical outcomes in a supported environment, where you will be valued for your skills and expertise.
With a strong focus on customer service our team of Porters/ Maintenance Assistants provide a vital service in our hospital. Although escorting patients in a safe and friendly manner is a key function of the role you will also be required to provide general porter services to all hospital departments. Duties will include management of waste, transit of blood and specimens, changing and handling of gas cylinders and manual handling of equipment.

The Berkshire Independent Hospital is one of Berkshire’s leading private hospitals with an excellent reputation for delivering high quality healthcare, treatments and services. The hospital, built in 1993, has 43 individual patient rooms all with en suite facilities. By investing in advanced medical technology, the hospital offers a wide range of treatments and services. The three fully equipped theatres with a seven-bedded recovery area are particularly suitable for orthopaedic procedures offered, such as arthroscopy, hip and knee replacement, spinal discectomy. A dedicated day surgery suite is suitable for minor surgery and endoscopy.
Key responsibilities:
1. Changing and handling of gas cylinders
2. Adhering to Health and Safety standards
3. Carrying out minor repairs and general maintenance tasks
4. Completing daily van runs for transport and delivery purposes
5. Conducting routine security checks of the hospital
6. Opening and securing the hospital at the start and end of each day
7. Management of waste
8. Supporting laundry services as required
9. Supervising and liaising with contractors on-site
10. Participating in an on- call rota (one week in every three)
11. Performing planned preventative maintenance checks
12. Providing internal and external postal services
What you’ll bring with you:
13. A valid, full UK driver’s licence is essential for this role
14. Maths/English to GCSE level or equivalent
15. Ability to work under your own initiative or as part of a small team
16. Ability to work within a challenging environment
17. Bring a ‘can do’ approach to the team
18. A flexible and positive attitude
19. Have good communication skills
20. Excellent customer service experience
21. Previous Porter experience (desired not required)
22. Previous experience in health care (desired not required)
