Patient Flow Coordinator

The Patient Flow Coordinator works as part of the Emergency Department Team within both the Emergency Department (ED) and Majors. The role is supervised by the Senior Nurse for the Emergency Department and involves the following responsibilities.

* Coordinate patient access and flow within the key areas of the Emergency Department.
* Work with the Multi‑Disciplinary Team (MDT) to optimize patient safety and available capacity at all times.
* Facilitate safe placement of patients within the Emergency Department by supporting bed allocation.
* Collaborate with the MDT to manage flow from Rapid Assessment into Majors, Resus, and CDU by providing liaison and support through established communication networks.
* Act as a source of advice and support for escalation within the department, proactively identifying barriers to flow and initiating the appropriate response in accordance with escalation policy.
* Support the Emergency Department team to provide a positive, safe patient experience.
* Assist the trust in achieving the 4‑hour National Patient Safety Initiative within the Emergency Department.
* Build and sustain good working relationships with trust‑wide operational teams and clinical staff.
* Ensure a professional, effective and efficient service to patients, relatives, colleagues and Trust staff.
* Use a wide range of effective and timely communication skills, acting independently to explain, analyse and interpret information/data.
* Deliver decisions and actions, modifying and adapting communication methods using influence and tact within the delegated sphere of authority.
* Plan, prioritise and organise workload, managing competing demands and interruptions to meet expected Trust and department standards and deadlines, escalating areas of concern as required.
* Model a professional and welcoming service, treating patients, relatives, colleagues and Trust staff in a friendly and courteous manner, presenting a good image of yourself through attitude, behaviour and appearance.
* Maintain a safe and professional environment, managing the reporting of problems and organising repairs or waste collection as required.
* Monitor and manage the team to ensure the efficient and effective use of departmental equipment and resources.

Fordcombe Hospital, near Tunbridge Wells, became part of the Trust in October 2024. Specialising in planned care, it offers two operating theatres, 28 inpatient and day‑care beds, diagnostic services (X‑ray, MRI, CT, and endoscopy), and consultation/treatment rooms.
