Location: London Job Description The Bank of England's Property Directorate plays a vital role in supporting the organisation's mission by maintaining and enhancing the buildings and engineering systems that enable our people to deliver their work safely and effectively. Through our Infrastructure Engineering team, we provide high‑quality engineering services across all Bank sites, ensuring a safe, resilient and efficient working environment for staff and visitors. As well as supporting day‑to‑day operations, the Property team leads significant annual capital investment, underpins business continuity, and oversees strategic health and safety management. The wider service portfolio includes facilities management, events support, catering, cleaning, post services, travel, reception, helpdesk operations and switchboard services-each delivered with a strong focus on quality, value for money and operational excellence. The Engineering team consists of around 56 specialists and supports three core Bank properties: our Grade I‑listed Threadneedle Street headquarters, 20 Moorgate, and the Debden print facility in Essex. These locations house critical infrastructure essential to the Bank's operations, requiring robust engineering oversight and high system resilience at all times. Operating 24/7/365, the team maintains and manages a wide range of engineering systems across office, data centre, production, and operational environments. The breadth and complexity of our estate provide an excellent opportunity to develop and apply specialist engineering skills in a uniquely critical setting. As a Critical Shift Engineer, you will help ensure the continuous safe operation of our engineering systems. Your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to): Managing and closing work permits, and raising work requests for reactive activity. Delivering statutory, planned and preventative maintenance using our Planon IWMS. Maintaining resilience and availability of critical systems around the clock. Conducting daily and periodic checks across engineering and building systems. Identifying, prioritising and resolving engineering faults to minimise operational disruption. Completing inspections and reports across HVAC, electrical, public health, fire, and other building systems. Supporting monthly systems integration testing and wider incident‑recovery exercises. Coordinating contractors delivering maintenance, statutory testing and emergency callouts. Acting as an Authorised Person (HV/LV - mechanical and/or electrical) in line with Bank safe‑systems‑of‑work. Championing Health & Safety and contributing to continuous improvement across the team. Completing required training and performance objectives. Participating in the weekly on‑call rota to support incident response across all three sites. Evidence of supporting continuous improvement or engineering projects. Role Requirements Minimum Criteria Security Vetting to SC Clearance - will be provided by the Bank. Minimum City & Guilds Level 4 (or transferable) within a relevant engineering subject IOSH Managing Safely qualification. Experience of operating with a defined Safe Systems of Work (SSoW). Essential Criteria Ability to develop, absorb and follow prescribed Standard and Emergency Operating Procedures (SOP's & EOP's) Experience operating and maintaining of HVAC; BMS; Electrical; Public Health and Life Safety Systems. Ability to read and understand complicated mechanical, electrical, control and public health drawings. Demonstrable Authorised Person experience at HV, LV MechAP system operation. Desirable Criteria Experience in critical or secure environments (e.g., data centres, security‑controlled sites). Additional engineering or manufacturer‑specific certifications (HVAC, BMS, electrical, life‑safety). Evidence of supporting continuous improvement or engineering projects. Salary and Benefits Information A base salary of £43,830 - £48,700 (£11,000 Shift allowance) per annum plus additional flexible cash benefits as detailed below will help to supplement the cash salary. Flexible benefits package of 8% ( £3,896 * if on upper salary) of base salary. This can be taken as cash or used to buy from a range of benefits including up to 12 days additional leave, gym memberships, private health insurance for partner/family and much more. Performance award based on a potential award of 10% £4,870 *if on upper salary Core benefits package: 26 days annual leave Interest-free season ticket loan Private health insurance Dental insurance (level 1) Membership to the Bank's pension scheme (non-contributory, career average). The pension you build up is guaranteed income and the Bank will pay out a secure income for life which increases each year. As employees we do not make any contributions to the scheme, the Bank makes up all the contributions on our behalf. Life assurance of 4 x pensionable salary Non-contractual performance award per annum (typically an average of up to 8-10% for 'good' performance). This is conditional upon you still being employed with the Bank during the bonus round. Please note that the next available reward period would be for calendar year 2026, payable in early 2027. Additional reward for being appointed HV/LV Authorised Person £1,500 Mechanical AP £1,500. This means that £68,466 could be achievable, with appropriate AP certification and worked overtime. Overtime opportunities maybe available which will be paid at double the hourly rate. National Security Vetting Process Employment in this role will be subject to the National Security Vetting clearance process (and typically can take between 6 to 12 weeks post offer) and the passing of additional Bank security checks in accordance with the Bank policy.
