Job Summary
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a 12 month fixed term, full time, Locally Employed Doctor to join the inpatient team at Hew Haven older adult mental health unit, Bromsgrove.
New Haven has two wards: Meadow Ward – a 12‑bedbed ward providing acute assessment and treatment services for people living with dementia; and Woodland Ward – an 18‑bedded ward providing acute assessment and treatment services for people with a functional mental health condition.
There are 2 Consultant Psychiatrists as well as Resident Doctor support. A robust multidisciplinary team at New Haven includes Ward Managers, Deputy Ward Managers, Nurses, Nurse Associates, Health Care Support Workers, Health Care Assistants, OT Lead, OT Assistants, a Physiotherapist, and an Administrator. Meadow Ward boasts a purpose‑built dementia garden (Meadow Green) named the Outdoor Space of the Year 2024 Design in Mental Health Awards.
The role also provides clinical assessments as part of our community hospital liaison team who support patients within our community hospitals. This is a fixed‑term post providing cover for absence and may be ended earlier with appropriate notice.
Responsibilities
* Provide clinical assessment and formulation of treatment plans, liaising with the referrer under supervision of a consultant psychiatrist.
* Conduct psychiatric evaluations, risk assessments, mental state examinations, and prescribe treatments in line with NICE guidance.
* Handle routine, urgent and emergency referrals as part of the multidisciplinary team.
* Provide timely written correspondence, assess ongoing management and discharge letters using Trust IT and clinical records system with training provided.
* Conduct clinical assessments as part of the Community Hospital Liaison team.
* Work flexibly between the two wards in agreement with the Woodland ward consultant supervisor.
* Maintain active commitment to delivering the Trust’s clinical governance agenda.

Person Specification
Experience
* Essential
* Experience of managing serious psychiatric illness.
* Experience of assessing suicide risk.
* Minimum 2 years full‑time postgraduate training (or equivalent part‑time) with at least 4 months psychiatry experience and demonstrable competencies.
* Desirable
* Experience teaching medical undergraduates and an interest in teaching.
* Ability to work across teams and disciplinary boundaries.
Knowledge
* To exercise an intermediate level of clinical responsibility as delegated by the consultant in charge.
* Ability to contribute to effective team working.
* Capacity to prioritise workload.
* Work collaboratively and effectively with a range of professionals.
* Knowledge of appropriate medical, pharmacological and psychological treatments.
Qualifications
* General medical qualification.
