Job Responsibilities Lead in the delivery of an accurate, efficient, and compliant payroll service for all UK and ROI employees alongside the Payroll and Compliance Manager. This includes overseeing payroll operations managed by the Payroll & Compliance Manager, pensions, compliance, statutory reporting, and driving key payroll-related projects.
Support the Financial Controller with payroll accounting processes, including journal entries and reconciliations.
Manage monthly payroll processing across all payrolls (hourly, salaried, and ROI) for approximately 800 employees, especially when the Payroll & Compliance Manager is unavailable.
Oversee payroll calculation checks to ensure accurate outputs from third-party providers like AHP, NMW, and maternity.
Manage the strategic partnership with external payroll providers to maintain high service standards and meet SLAs.
Monitor processing issues over time to identify trends requiring further problem-solving, correction, or training.
Ensure full compliance with HMRC regulations, including PAYE, NI, BIK reporting, PSA, and NMW.
Oversee pension provisions, including auto-enrollment, working with pension providers for accurate communication and education.
Collaborate with pension consultants to review and optimize pension schemes for cost-efficiency and employee benefit.
Lead the design and implementation of reward initiatives such as salary sacrifice and recognition schemes.
Coordinate with the Payroll & Compliance Manager on audit preparations and respond to internal and external audit queries.
Lead system audits within the Finance/People Team to ensure data accuracy and develop or review payroll policies.
Drive process improvements across payroll, pensions, and rewards to enhance operational excellence and employee experience.
Manage payroll and reward aspects of strategic projects, including system migrations, upgrades, and structural changes.
Create clear, employee-friendly communications regarding pay, benefits, and pensions.
Stay updated on relevant legislation, recommending process changes as needed.
Candidate Profile Commercially savvy with an understanding of the retail environment and payroll's impact on performance and trust.
Deep technical expertise in UK/ROI payroll, pensions, statutory payments, and NMW legislation, with a proactive approach to legislative changes.
High attention to detail, ensuring processes are accurate, compliant, and audit-ready.
Proactive, solutions-focused, and capable of managing payroll projects alongside operational duties.
Strong collaborator and relationship builder across stakeholders including People, Finance, and external providers.
Discreet, trustworthy, and professional in handling sensitive information.
Experience in a retail setting and comfortable with payroll systems, HRIS platforms, and Excel.
