Job summary
This is a post for a substantive Consultant Cellular Pathologist post, in the Department of Cellular Pathology in Barking Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust for the replacement of a colleague who has retired. The appointee will, together with Consultant Cellular Pathologist colleagues, share the responsibility for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective service to the Trust and local General Practitioners and other users of the service.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for one full-time replacement Consultant post in Histopathology (Permanent). The successful candidate will be joining a department with eleven Consultant Histopathologists, two honorary consultant pathologists, a Clinical Scientist for immunohistochemistry/molecular pathology and a cut up team made up of four specialty doctors and 1 pathologists' assistant.

This is a very busy UKAS accredited department with an interesting, varied, and growing workload, covering virtually every specialty except medical renal biopsies and paediatric/neonatal pathology. All the samples from the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre at Basildon are processed in the department (cut-up, routine & special stains, immunohistochemistry and some limited molecular pathology using PCR) and the specialised cardiothoracic pathologists there hold honorary consultant appointments with the BHRUT cellular pathology department. The Trust hosts the Essex Neurosciences centre but reporting of neuropathology specimen has been outsourced since the single neuropathologist relocated several years ago.

There are approximately 34,000 surgical and 8,000 non gynaecological cytology specimen per year. Following centralisation of gynae cytology screening with introduction of primary HPV screening in December 2019, the department no longer receives such specimen. The department however still supports breast and bowel cancer NHS screening programmes and is a major Cancer Centre for Essex.

About us

We're an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A& E performance in 2023/24 we're no longer in special measures and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we're proud of and that our patients are happy with.

Many of our 8,000 staff - who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we're proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London - more than 300,000 people visited our A& Es in 2023.

Patients across northeast London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We're looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It'll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.

Job description
Job responsibilities

BHRUT is currently developing increasingly closer working relationship with Barts Health which is a major academic centre and one of the largest Trusts in England. Consequently, the cellular pathology department at BHRUT has a strong desire to keep abreast of modern trends/recent developments so as to remain in a position to offer patients the best service possible within the limits of available resources.

This post is one of some recently established Specialty Doctor posts that have been designed to help the department achieve this goal especially with respect to Cardiothoracic and Molecular Pathology. The plan is for the post holders to have some time in general pathology, cardiothoracic pathology, practical aspects of molecular pathology/genomic testing (in close collaboration with the clinical scientist) and digital pathology. The post holder will contribute to a thriving culture of clinically relevant audit/quality improvement as well as full participation of the department in relevant projects in the Trusts Research and Development unit.

We have a fantastic laboratory with excellent immunohistochemistry facilities. Over 90% of routine (NICE recommended) molecular testing such as EGFR, PD-L1, KRAS, NRAS and Her2 - ISH testing are still being done in-house even as the department continues to forge closer links with our GLH at Royal Marsden in order to ensure that our patients have full access to sequencing based molecular/genomic testing.

The successful candidate must hold GMC registration, and FRCPath or its equivalent.
