The Role
The post-holder will plan and manage a range of activity related to training and career development in public health research associated with the delivery of the NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR). The Training Manager under the guidance and direction of the NIHR SPHR Director, SPHR Academic Career Development Lead (ACDL) and School Manager will coordinate the delivery of a range of training programmes and initiatives nationally to the cohort of SPHR trainees (includes undergraduate summer internships, PhD students, pre- and post-doctoral fellows and early- to mid-career researchers).
The Training Manager will coordinate a variety of training opportunities for trainees and researchers at all levels to support the next generation of researchers in public health.
The Training Manager will ensure operational aspects of the training programme are delivered in accordance with the NIHR SPHR Academic Capacity Development and Training (ACD) Strategy and that specific objectives are achieved by monitoring and reporting progress, making suggestions and recommendations to the NIHR SPHR Director, Academic Career Development Lead (ACDL) and School Manager. The Training Manager reports directly to the NIHR SPHR School Manager.
This is a fixed term role until 31 Mar 2029.
Key accountabilities
1. Act as the main point of contact for all NIHR SPHR-related training enquiries and build up a knowledge base of local and national training priorities
2. Organise regular project update meetings, maintaining appropriate communication with all stakeholders.
3. Provide a mechanism for the early identification of potential issues and develop solutions along with the School Manager, ACDL and wider member and research programme leads
4. Manage training activity and monitor progress for all NIHR SPHR trainees within the School
5. As directed by the School Manager and SPHR ACDL, plan and coordinate a programme of workshops, seminars and conferences focused on training and career development
6. Prepare progress reports, success case studies and other performance indicators across the training remit
7. Work with colleagues in other parts of NIHR infrastructure including the NIHR Academy, NIHR ARCs and the other two NIHR Schools to develop synergy, joint working and shared activity that will support the delivery of the NIHR SPHR Business Plan and ACD Strategy
8. Create and manage a network of ‘training’ contacts and actively promote local and national training opportunities
9. Working with the School Manager and Communications Manager make regular updates to the training section of the NIHR SPHR website and manage associated training communications through social media and publicity material
10. Take responsibility for identifying own learning needs, including identifying appropriate courses to ensure up to date knowledge of NIHR infrastructure and the associated national public health research agenda
11. Manage a complex network of relationships across the 9 members of NIHR SPHR
12. Support the wider delivery of the NIHR SPHR as directed by the SPHR Director, Academic Career Development Lead and School Manager
13. Serve as a member of the central support team in SPHR and play a role in operationalising its overall strategy
14. Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role
