Advanced Clinical Pharmacist – Emergency Department

Job summary
We are seeking a highly motivated, innovative, and enthusiastic clinical pharmacist to join our Emergency Department (ED) Pharmacy team at Mersey and West Lancashire (MWL) Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is based at Whiston Hospital, providing clinical pharmacy services to ED patients at this site.
This is a fixed-term position to cover maternity leave, working closely with the pharmacy ED team, medical, and nursing colleagues, delivering services to the ED and acute medicine. All areas have well-established multidisciplinary teams focused on high-quality, cost-effective, and patient-centered pharmaceutical care.
Previous experience in providing pharmaceutical care to acutely unwell patients is essential. Candidates should hold or be working towards a non-medical prescribing qualification. The role requires a team player with significant clinical experience, excellent interpersonal skills, and attention to detail. You will be encouraged to develop and implement your own ideas and help advance the pharmacy service under the guidance of the clinical service manager and principal clinical pharmacists.

Main duties of the job
The department operates a 7-day service, and you will be expected to participate in the rostered weekend working (currently 1 in 5), as well as late-night working and on-call duties. The role is based at Whiston Hospital.
The Trust has two modern PFI hospitals: Whiston Hospital (opened April 2010) and Newton Hospital, which has recently been integrated into the Trust's services. Whiston Hospital is the main site, serving a large suburban area between Liverpool and Warrington, including St Helens, Prescot, and Huyton. The Trust manages approximately 850 beds across all sites, is an accredited teaching hospital, and offers most major specialties.

Job responsibilities
KEY DUTIES
* Assist the Head of Pharmacy and pharmacy staff in delivering an efficient pharmaceutical service.
* Support the development and delivery of pharmaceutical services aligned with medicines optimisation strategies.
* Lead and deliver high-quality clinical pharmacy services, including developing an advanced pharmacist role.
* Develop competencies in your specialty and provide ward-based clinical teaching to pharmacists and pre-registration trainees.
* Practice as an approved Independent Non-Medical Prescriber.
* Participate in clinical audits and practice research.
* Contribute to departmental rotas to ensure 7-day service provision.
* Support clinical training and supervision of staff.
* Review and develop guidelines and policies.
* Evaluate and interpret clinical information, applying professional judgment.
* Stay updated with national policies, guidelines, and NICE guidance, recommending formulary updates as needed.
* Monitor national medical and pharmaceutical developments to inform practice.
CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
* Provide advanced clinical pharmacy services, including drug history taking, medication review, and therapy optimization.
* Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and ward rounds.
* Provide pharmaceutical advice to staff and patients, liaising with primary care professionals.
* Record clinical interventions and report drug errors.
* Participate in therapeutic drug monitoring and provide dosage advice.
* Ensure prescription accuracy, compliance with regulations, and safe medication management.
* Educate patients on medication use and potential side effects.
* Order, receive, and dispense controlled drugs per regulations.
* Supervise junior staff and pre-registration pharmacists.
* Assist with clinical trials and research activities.
* Develop and deliver training for staff and students.
* Participate in departmental audits, meetings, and CPD activities.
* Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and departmental policies.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Master's degree in pharmacy
* Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Clinical Pharmacy
* Pre-registration training (minimum 1 year)
* Membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council
* Non-Medical Prescribing qualification or working towards it
* Commitment to CPD and professional development
* Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS)
Knowledge & Experience
* Extensive experience in clinical pharmacy across multiple specialties in an acute hospital setting
* In-depth clinical knowledge and patient management experience
* Experience in a busy dispensary environment
* Experience with drug reporting, financial management, and practice research
* Experience using pharmacy computer systems and electronic prescribing
Skills
* Excellent communication and presentation skills
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
* Ability to work under pressure
