We are looking for a researcher, whose expertise lies in wave simulations, to work with Prof Gregor Tanner and Dr Martin Richter on an EPSRC-funded project entitled "xDEA - Vibro-acoustic energy flow in hybrid systems: improving the simulation of engineering structures". As part of the project - jointly undertaken by the University of Nottingham and the University of Salford -, we offer a Research Associate/Fellow position at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Nottingham, for the duration of 3 years. The project deals with the development of mathematical tools and models to determine the properties of vibrational sources in large built-up structures, such as cars or airplanes. We will incorporate data from measurements and implement these sources into large-scale structure-borne sound calculations. In this collaboration, the experimental work will be carried out at the University of Salford, whereas the mathematical analysis and numerical modelling will be done at Nottingham.
The work will be based on existing research on high-frequency methods for built-up structures and their vibrational behaviour. For this, we are looking for a candidate who is strong in both the analytical background of linear wave equations and boundary element techniques as well as their high-frequency approximations. Furthermore, the candidate will be expected to extend the existing code in order to apply the developed predictions to the experimental results of our partners from Salford and to include their experimental data for modelling vibrational sources
and interconnections.

You will be able to carry out duties to the highest standard and to evidence how through your experience you will:
• Undertake original research of international excellence.

• Prepare papers for publication in leading journals and/or contribute to the dissemination at national/international conferences, workshops and meetings resulting in successful research outputs.
• Identify opportunities and assist in writing bids for research grant applications. Prepare proposals and applications to both external and/or internal bodies for funding, contractual or accreditation purposes.
We are looking for a confident, organised researcher who can evidence:
• A PhD, or equivalent in mathematics, theoretical physics or a relevant branch of engineering.
• OR near to completion of a PhD.
• Expert knowledge of linear PDEs (in particular wave equations and elliptic equations), high-frequency asymptotics, and numerical methods.
• Excellent communication and organisational skills.
• The ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary and multicultural team.
• Networking, actively engaging with and valuing other areas and diverse groups.
This full-time (36.25 hours per week), post is available on a fixed term contract from 1st August 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter, until 31 July 2028.
