Overview

As a respiratory specialist nurse, the post holder is responsible for ensuring the effective running of the Interstitial lung disease (ILD) and Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) service in the absence of the Senior Respiratory Nurse Specialist. The post holder will assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care during their span of duty, undertake specialist duties with support, run nurse-led clinics, participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, provide ward and telephone support and make home visits. The post holder will provide specialist knowledge, advice, support and care to patients, carers and other health professionals relating to pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and Pulmonary Hypertension. This is a developmental role; the successful applicant will commence at Band 6 and work towards completing the non-medical prescribing course, with elevation to Band 7 once criteria are met.

The post holder will contribute to service development, undertaking research and audits within this specialty and developing protocols, procedures, standards and tools to implement care.


Main duties of the job

* Undertakes advanced clinical skills which may include:
* Spirometry interpretation
* Physical examination
* Chest examination
* Chest radiography interpretation
* Phlebotomy
* Assisting right heart catheterisation studies and delivering Nitric oxide
* Provides specialist patient care to an allocated workload for the span of duty
* Assists the Lead Specialist Nurse in implementing corporate and nursing objectives
* Plans care for patients, organises appointments and treatments
* Manages and prioritises own workload against patient and service needs
* Delivers care interventions and specialist advice in hospital, patients’ homes and peripheral hospitals

Job responsibilities

Gains specialist knowledge to assess, plan, evaluate and implement care interventions for patients, requesting support as required. Works to agreed policy and procedure to implement care. Maintains up-to-date knowledge in their specialist field and pursues ongoing professional development. Works towards completion of the non-medical prescribing programme. Obtains informed consent, communicating complex information about management of care (benefits, risks, alternatives, compliance and lifestyle advice). Takes detailed nursing and medical histories to plan, implement and evaluate care. Maintains professional competence and standards. Contributes to development and updating of guidelines and policies with consultants and the multi-disciplinary team. Delivers care programmes within agreed pathways and protocols. Provides ward-based support and knowledge for patients and staff. Uses professional knowledge to assess, plan, evaluate and implement respiratory care interventions. Ensures appropriate referrals to support timely discharge and to avoid hospital admission. Supports the use of equipment or digital tools. Collaborates with the respiratory nurse specialist lead.

Knowledge

* Essential: NMC registered
* Desirable: mentorship, respiratory qualification, non-medical prescribing

Experience

* Essential: experience within the respiratory speciality
* Desirable: experience of ILD patients

Skills

* Essential: car driver, IT literate, evidence of professional development
* Desirable: venepuncture
