Kanaama is a UK registered charity (2100172) working since 2009 to improve the lives of women and children in rural SW Uganda through a local partner. Projects include agriculture, literacy, business, and teacher training. Join us and make a real difference.
What difference will you make?
Kanaama has a close relationship with its beneficiaries in SW Uganda, as it works in just one area. KICS Uganda staff are in close contact with trustees in the UK, especially the director. Your involvement – to provide strategic direction, oversight and expert advice – will be crucial to the success of our work. You will also have the opportunity to be part of a small group of like‑minded people working together.
What are we looking for?
In general the trustee should have
* integrity
* a commitment to the organisation and its objectives
* an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
* a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties as a trustee
* strategic vision
* good, independent judgement
* an ability to think creatively
* willingness to speak their mind
* an ability to work effectively as a member of a team
* a keen interest in quality collaborative development and Africa/Uganda
In addition, they should have skills and experience in the area of communications. We have a small but loyal supporter and donor base which we would like to grow. We need your time and skills!
What will you be doing?
We are seeking trustees to support Kanaama's vision of Rural SW Uganda without poverty, its people in good health and with universal education. Our mission is to deliver this through an integrated multi‑sectoral development programme focusing on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable through capacity building, education and welfare.
We support a wide range of projects working with the poorest microcredit, village savings and loans, adult literacy, agricultural and business training, support for school attendance (orphans and vulnerable children), teacher training, menstrual health education, and water and sanitation.
In 2025 our income was £84,000. Funds are raised from private individuals, charitable trusts and some official donors.
Kanaama is a UK charity (a charitable incorporated organisation or CIO) and KICS Uganda is a Ugandan charitable company. They have the same aims and work closely together.
In the UK, Kanaama is governed by a board of up to 10 trustees. Our UK operations are entirely voluntary, and trustees are involved in the day‑to‑day work of the charity. It is important that trustee applicants are prepared to take on some administrative and fundraising functions, as well as advise from their professional perspective. One of Kanaama's trustees acts as an unpaid director who assists with planning projects, administration in the UK, and applies for grants.
KICS Uganda has a board of directors and employs nine staff. Currently it receives grant funding from Kanaama and earns income from its microcredit programme. From time to time, Kanaama trustees visit Kashare for monitoring and planning with Ugandan colleagues. The last visit was in September 2025.
Kanaama is particularly keen to hear from candidates with a background in communications to help with the website redevelopment and social media with an aim to increasing our support base. International development experience is not required, but an interest in Africa/Uganda is preferable. Kanaama is also looking for a new chair.
