Job overview

An exciting opportunity to join our newly formed team, we are a 19 bedded elective orthopaedic and surgical unit incorporating 4 enhanced care beds.

In this role, you will:

1. Lead with Purpose – Support the ward manager in ensuring the smooth, efficient running of our elective ward, providing clear leadership and direction to maintain the highest standards of care and professional practice.

2. Collaborate and Adapt – Work closely with the ward manager and matron on the unit offering flexible support and cross-cover when needed.

3. Champion Patient-Centred Care – Take responsibility for planning, delivering, and evaluating personalised care that meets the health and wellbeing needs of every patient, aligned with our Trust Values and the Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework.

4. Inspire and Develop Others – Act as a role model, offering guidance, clinical supervision, and mentorship to staff and students, helping them reach their full potential.

5. Ensure Excellence in Environment – Maintain a safe, clean, and organised outpatient setting that supports productive and high-quality care.

Main duties of the job

To support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse or Matron in ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for within or by the ward, department, service or team.

Be responsible for ensuring the planning, delivery and evaluation of care to meet the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of patients, in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework

Provide strong leadership and direction to the team, monitoring and maintaining standards of care and professional practice to support day to day efficient running of the clinical area, service.

Act as a strong role model and provide development, clinical supervision and advice for other staff and students to support them in reaching their full potential. Actively engage in research and development opportunities for the service.

To ensure the productive operation of the ward environment through the maintenance of a safe, clean and organised environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse or Matron in ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for within or by the ward, department, service or team.

Ensure a high standard of nursing is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and National standards and evidence based guidelines.

Assist and support the Ward Manager in the safe, effective management of the area including management of personnel, facilities and the associated systems and processes

Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation

Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff

Set, monitor and maintain standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.

Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.

Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care

Promote provision of patient education and health promotion

Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals

Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.

To participate in education and training of junior staff.

Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

6. Appropriate NMC Registration
7. •NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
8. •Evidence of continuing professional education or development in area of speciality
9. •At least 3 years qualified with surgical/orthopaedic experience

Desirable criteria

10. Degree
11. •Post registration qualification in area of speciality area Intensive care experience Seca/level 1 competency

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

12. •Evidence of leadership experience and learning.
13. •Knowledge of Clinical Governance and safeguarding and the relevance to practice
14. •Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
15. •Good time management skills

Desirable criteria

16. •Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
17. •Knowledge of Research and Development
18. •Intermediate IT skills
