Director of Platform Engineering UK Remote (must be based in the UK)

As Director of Platform Engineering, you’ll play a key role in owning infrastructure operations, growing a squad of engineers, scaling internal platforms, and enabling engineering teams to build securely and reliably at pace.
Key Details:
This is primarily a leadership role, but you'll remain hands-on with day-to-day engineering and operational decisions. We're looking for someone who has grown with a fast-paced start-up or scale-up. For example, from SEED through Series A or B funding rounds. You should be comfortable driving technical direction while supporting and scaling high-performing teams. Experience navigating security and compliance standards such as SOC 2 is a strong plus.
Key Responsibilities of the Role:
Oversee infrastructure operations, prioritising stability, system visibility, and efficient resource usage
Take ownership of cloud environments (primarily AWS), ensuring scalable, secure, and cost-effective architecture
Lead and develop distributed engineering teams across platform, infrastructure, and data
Build and maintain robust internal tooling and services that enhance developer workflows
Promote a culture of automation and continuous improvement
Shape and deliver a platform roadmap that treats internal teams as core users
Ensure infrastructure aligns with security, privacy, and regulatory requirements
Work closely with product and engineering groups to ensure platform consistency
✅ What You’ll Bring:
~ Demonstrated leadership experience in scaling technical teams within fast-moving environments
~10+ years of hands-on engineering experience, with extensive use of AWS
~ Deep familiarity with platform engineering or infrastructure roles in a SaaS business ideally
~ Proficiency with modern DevOps practices, container orchestration (e.g. Kubernetes), infrastructure-as-code, and monitoring stacks
~ History of managing teams, ideally remote
~ A track record of delivering complex technical initiatives at speed
~ Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to align technical and business goals
Bonus if you have:
Experience building or supporting high-performance data platforms (e.g. stream processing, change data capture)
Familiarity with Python, Django, or Golang
Contributions to open-source communities or tools
Working knowledge of Postgres, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions)
Interest or experience in developer productivity tools and AI-assisted engineering
Understanding of network systems, protocols, or distributed computing challenges
