The role

Are you an experienced welder looking to pass on your trade to the next generation? Or an established engineering educator looking for a flexible part‑time role? We are seeking a passionate and skilled Welding Assessor/Lecturer to join our dynamic Engineering Department on a 0.5 fractional contract. In this role, you will play a vital part in shaping the future of the engineering sector, teaching and assessing groups of post‑16 learners including 16‑18 study programme students, adult learners, and engineering apprentices. Your role will include working as workplace assessor for an assigned caseload of welding apprentices and college‑based delivery of high‑quality practical and theoretical training across Levels 1 and 2 Welding, ensuring learners develop the precise manual skills and safety awareness required by modern industry. Our workshops are equipped for multi‑process training and you will be expected to instruct learners in practical & theoretical training in a safe workshop environment.

Must‑Have

  • Strong, demonstrable background in industrial welding and fabrication with high proficiency in MIG/MAG, TIG, and MMA processes
  • Relevant industry qualification in Welding or Fabrication (e.g. BS 4872, ISO 9606, City & Guilds, EAL, NVQ, or equivalent)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage, motivate, and manage a workshop environment safely
  • Strong understanding of health and safety regulations relevant to engineering environments (COSHH, PUWER, HASAWA)
  • Experience of teaching, training, or mentoring others in a welding or engineering context
  • Ability to track learner progress and prepare students for practical assessments and industry‑recognised qualifications

Nice‑to‑Have

  • A1/TAQA Assessor Award, CSWIP 3.1, or a recognised teaching qualification (DTLLS, PGCE, Cert Ed, AET/CET) – if you don't hold these, a commitment to achieving them with college support is essential
  • Experience working with 16‑18‑year‑olds, adult learners, and/or engineering apprentices
  • Knowledge of apprenticeship delivery, off‑the‑job training requirements and EPA processes
  • Previous experience in an FE or training provider setting
